This review is from: Travelin Light (Audio CD)
This version of the album is an import with a high price tag. The same tracks are also available as a download for much less.
The sessions are arranged and conducted by Johnny Mandel, a 15 piece orchestra and mother group of musicians led by Barney Kessel and including Jimmy Rowles on piano; Mel Lewis on drums; and Ben Webster on tenor sax.
Most of the numbers are standards and as with most Anita O'Day albums there are a few surprises in interpretation. It has been said that this album is a personal tribute to Billie Holiday hence the inclusion of God Bless the Child. I always loved to see Anita O'Day perform and have happy memories of her singing Wave on a PBS show back in 1978. She reinterpreted the song so much that it took on a whole new context for me.
