5.0 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll Soul - Buy This Album!, 16 Jan. 2007
By
Lukey Boy (Southampton, UK) - See all my reviews
I saw Pop Levi live a few months back at the Water Rats and it's fair to say they blew my mind. Pop Levi, the frontman and writer comes across as being possessed by the spirits of Jimi Hendrix (with his guitar solo's), Marc Bolan (the glam-influenced sound), Prince (his dance moves in stage) and Beck (in how current it sounds). The band are tight to and look the part, the drummer has to be the best rock drummer since Keith Moon (ok so that may be pushing it!). But seriously i cant wait for this album, ive heard quite a few tracks from the singles," Sugar Assault Me Now" is an Indie Dancefloor anthem, "Blue Honey" is like Led Zepplein for a new century and "From The Day You Were Born" is like a ballad that John Lennon would make if he were still alive today. They both come from Liverpool, so maybe he has his spirit too. Pop Levi could well be one of the smashes of 2007, and are in with a big chance of the Mercury Prize i'd say, like me i would buy this record on Feb 12th and go and see them before everyone else catches on at the summer festivals...

5.0 out of 5 stars Pop Levi quotes, 18 Jan. 2007

(REAL NAME)
Press Quotes for "Pop Levi Press Quotes do far..."

"Imagine Bolan produced by Prince, then scrambled by Beck, and you're only halfway there." UNCUT 4/5

"We've got a feeling that things are going pop off big time for this swaggering LA psyche child"

DAZED

"Less singer-songwriter, more junk yard Beck, this former member of Ladytron impressed Ninja Tune so much they gave him his own Counter Records imprint. And on the evidence of this first five-track ep, no wonder"

OMM - HOT TUNES

"Trippy, sexy, wickedly produced, deeply psychedelic glam rock"

MIX MAG

"A timeless glam racket from LA based Levi."

MUSIC WEEK - PLAYLIST

"This English born, L.A based multi-instrumentalist comes across as a convincing `modern T-Rex'....forthcoming album `The Return To Form Black Magick Party' should easily break him to a (deserved) large audience'

*****DMC UPDATE

"Rockabilly-tinged mentalist rock....astoundingly good"

WHAT'S ON

`Fully tremendous rock and roll soul...his gigs are things of craziness and wonder"

WORD

"A solo master of psych-glam-garage-blues-rock"

"debut EP 'Blue Honey' is one of the most infectious yet mind-blowing things you'll have heard"

"new psychlord on the block whose densely layered acid glam anthems are what Aphex Twin would sound like if he played astral rock'n'roll instead of techno"

TIME OUT

"..plays the sort of snake-hipped glam boogie that Kings Of Leon might if they'd spent the summer locked up in Noddy Holder's cellar"

NME

`Sugar Assault Me Now is no tiresome pastiche. From the moment the piledriving drums steam into the buzzsaw guitar, it's a blaze of discordant glory. The hint of S&M in the lyrics is simply the icing on the cake.

MUSIC WEEK

"Definitely a one off"
