5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Show. Ever Better DVD Release
This show was fantasic when I used to watch it years ago but hadn't seen it in years so when this came out I jumped at the chance to buy it hoping i'd still enjoy it. I never had to worry as it was just as funny today as it was back then. Jack & Tony are fantasic in their roles & this DVD release of the first 'season' is a triumph by CBS. If only all DVDs were released to...

2.0 out of 5 stars a disappointing beginning for a great series
I watched The Odd Couple a lot when it was getting late night repeats in the 80s and 90s, and I recall it as a funny show! But these episodes are very weak, lacking the bite that developed later. It seems to have been aimed at a different market, the comedy is very unsophisticated and generally somewhat lame. Even during this first series there seems to be some hardening...

This review is from: Odd Couple: Season One [DVD] [1971] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
If only all DVDs were released to such a high standard. The case is the same size as a standard case but re-designed to house it's 5 disks. Even the disks themselves look expensive & lovely presented in gray with silver writing. This series has been re-mastered & look great, although not crystal clear but they are from the 70s. All 24 episodes are here with some nice special specials that are listed above which are all again, well thought out which makes this DVD special. 10 hrs & 11 mins of pure comedy & while the chances are small it'll get a region 2 released this one plays well on a multiplayer. My opinion is obvious. It's a fantastic release of a fantastic comedy series so buy it now as it's price too is a bargain.

Just been watching this DVD again, after having it my collection since it's release. It is generally accepted by most "Odd Couple" fans that this, season 1, is the "least good" of the five seasons - due, in no small part to the use of a laugh track/no studio audience. Personally I prefer this season to a lot of the episodes from seasons 4 and 5. (Not all - I hasten to add!). Some of my favourite episodes come from this season - "The Jury Story", "It's All Over Now Baby Bird" "They Use Horse Radish, Don't They?" "Bunny is Missing" (not a popular choice, but Tony Randall is perfect in the last scene with Pamelyn Ferdin) and, the highlight - the penultimate episode "What Does A Naked Lady Say To You" (again, not realised as the classic it is IMHO)

My problem - the commentaries ... Whilst it is obviously nice to have Carole Shelley (Gwendilyn Pigeon) comment on the opening episode - the vast majority of her comments relate to being in the original stage show and the movie. Hey Carole, we are watching the TV show at the moment!! You make it perfectly clear that you prefer Jack Lemmon and Art Carney in the Felix role - not directly, but by implication.

Garry Marshall too - totally irritates with his constant references to his film career since the ODD COUPLE...."I did this in the Princess Bride"....."I was learning on the Odd Couple - I did it better on Pretty Woman" etc.

Jack Klugman himself comments on "It's All Over Now Baby Bird" (The ODD COUPLE's Dead Parrot episode) ...but sadly, he repeats certain anecdotes several times :(.

However, all in all, an essential release. Cut one star due to the reasons stated above.

It seems to have been aimed at a different market, the comedy is very unsophisticated and generally somewhat lame. Even during this first series there seems to be some hardening up, some stronger focus, the later episodes being better than the earlier ones. But the team still had a way to go before they really hit form.
This inoffensive fare might suit people who like... inoffensive fare!
