This review is from: Scott, C - Piano Concertos Nos 1 and 2; Early One Morning. (Audio CD)
Even if you have purchased the fine Chandos recordings of these works I would still strongly recommend this CD as an essential supplement. There is a unique poetry about Bernard Herrmann's and John Ogdon's collaboration in this music. The Piano Concerto No 1 is a hauntingly atmospheric work with a distinctly "chinese" feel to it. Like Boult's recording of the great Moeran Symphony, I have waited decades for this to appear on CD having greatly enjoyed the two LPs produced in the 1970s. The Second Piano Concerto is a more difficult nut to crack, less immediately appealing than the First Concerto but still a fine work worth persevering with. Cyril Scott's "Early One Morning" is perhaps the most immediately appealing piece; an absolute delight. Strongly recommended.
