Lesley Garrett - When I Fall in Love
on 9 December 2008
This is a difficult album to review. The concept of an Opera Singer singing popular songs, is not an issue for me. It's more a case of how the material is handled by the singer, that's the issue for me.
Don't get me wrong, I have some favourites on the album: "Where Do I Begin" (the instrumental theme from Love Story); "He was Beautiful"; "Come What May" (featuring Michael Ball) and "More" - are all good tracks.
However, there are a few tracks that I was disappointed with, like "Moonriver" & the songs by Edith Piaf.
I feel that the Piaf songs, lack a bit of authority from Lesley. Saying that however, I do recognise that covering such legendary songs as Piaf's, is not an easy task. However, it feels like the Orchestra are left to build the trademark atmosphere in "Non, Je ne Regrette Rien" entirely alone. This track may work better for Lesley in Concert, rather than on disc.
Overall, I would say, that the concept of this album is a good one but, fails to deliver in some respects.
