4.0 out of 5 stars The Phoenix and the Carpet, 31 Mar 2009

This is an extremely good film. It was originally shown episode by episode and it has the most realistic phoenix. However, unfortunately two adventures have been omitted in the DVD version; the adventure at the bazaar with Miss peasmarsh and Mrs Biddle and the second to last adventure featuring the return of the clergyman and Robert and Jane being trapped on a tower. The reason for this is unknown. All the episodes originally aired have been stuck together to form a film which is an hour and a half. Yet it is neverthless very enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars magic carpets and talking birds, 19 Nov 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I worked on special effects for this award-nominated mini-series and watching these perfectly spoken and well-behaved children interact with a wobbly rubber bird always makes me smile. Totally in the vein of children's adventure our little heroes and heroines get themselves in all manner of pickle with their hasty use of three wishes. Miriam Margoyles is fantastic as the cook finding love on what is meant to be an exotic south-seas island, but is in reality Brighton beach.
Great fun for all the family if you can forgive the flaws.

This is an excellent DVD based on one of Edith Nesbit's best loved stories. It tells the story of a family of Edwardian children who find a mysterious egg in a carpet that has just arrived. Out of the egg comes - the Phoenix, a remarkable bird from past ages that can talk to the children and tell them about the carpet - that it can take them to places! Soon the children are using the carpet to explore. They go to a mysterious tower abroad - and find out, too late, that the carpet can only grant so many wishes a day! They go to the South Seas - and a cook becomes a queen! They ask the carpet for precious things from its own land - but the result is very unexpected! Adventures abound - but so do problems!
This is a very good TV version of a great book, and well worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BBC adaption 'made' into a Disney movie & very good, 12 Feb 2006

This is the BBC adaptation of The Phoenix and the carpet (from 1997). The book was written by Edith Nesbit in 1904. She wrote 44 books including 'The Railway children (1906)' and 'Five Children and It (1902)'. This adaptation has an all star cast: Miriam Margolyes, Jean Alexander, Christopher Biggins, and David Suchet (phoenix's voice). The story is the sequel to 'Five children and it' and does feature it's Psammead (sand fairy) in a guest role. This series was made well after '5 children' so the child actors had to replaced, although as usual for these BBC serials the top notch acting from the kids often upstages the adults. Naturally it's all a bit Edwardian middle class, but this often works to the story's advantage as it means they can wonder about freely in a gang as children used to do in simpler times (with the notion that the older ones are looking after their younger siblings).

Although an excellent adaptation and really enjoyed by my children (boy 9, girl 11), note that this is a 'Disney' offering and so the original 6 episodes at 28 minutes each have been heavily cut and made into a seamless 93 minute movie (still very good). The overall quality of this adaptation is excellent and the special effects are to a high standard (certainly more than adequate). Also it's not available as a complete BBC DVD yet so this is at least a lot better than nothing. Naturally the BBC's 'Five children and it' DVD is a logical pre-view, but it's not essential to the plot (but it is well worth seeing if you have preteen children about). This story is more about adventure and travel than the earlier slightly more moralistic book. There are still 'wishes' to be granted by the carpet though, and the onboard Phoenix adds the wise commentary, largely along the lines of "Actually it would be a really bad idea to do that, oops too late !". Other superb BBC DVD adaptations ideal for preteens are The Shoebox Zoo, The Narnia Chronicles, The Box of delights and The Borrowers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nesbitt's forgotten tale, 13 Feb 2014

E. Nesbitt of the 'Railway Children' fame wrote this charming childrens tale, which is often over looked. An enchanting story of four Edwardian children who discover a talking Phoenix wrapped up in a carpet delivered to their nursery. David Suchet voices the Phoenix, but do not expect Poirot! I feel children of seven years upwards would enjoy this one. There are several adventures, set in a gentler caring world than today. A good antidote for cries of 'We're bored there is nothing to do!'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - but too long, 3 Dec 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is very well made and very suitable & engaging for children.

Only complaint is - it is too long. The 30min episodes have been stuck together to give a long, long running time.

It needed to be broken into episodes, just like when originally broadcast.
