5.0 out of 5 stars Bach: St John's Passion
This wonderful music is beautifully performed by the Tolz Boys Choir. I was impressed by the ages of the younger boys (about 10 years of age) I think. The older boys looked as young as teenagers or early twenties. Having sung this work before, I thought the young singers did an excellent job, especially as the performance was nearly 2 hours long. 1.0 out of 5 stars This is not by Richter
This is false advertising - hence the 'hate' rating. I don't like my time being wasted in this way. No doubt it is a satisfactory recording, but for me only Richter will do.

The setting too, was in a very beautiful Cathedral (Graz's Gothic-Baroque). It was very enjoyable

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive St John Passion, 25 Oct 2012

This review is from: Bach: St John's Passion (Richter) [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
Without doubt this must be the definitive DVD of Bach's St John Passion to date. It isn't just - or even mainly - that it is an "authentic" performance. Its main characteristic is that it is as moving as surely Bach intended it to be for the Leipzig congregation. How wonderful that Harnoncourt had the courage to trust his instinct that, as in Bach's day, boy singers could interpret the soprano and alto solos not only technically but also emotionally more than adequately. The two altos are particularly moving in their interpretation of their emotionally charged arias, more than vindicating, as does the whole performance, the conviction that the search for the authentic is not dry and barren as some claim, but rather rich and moving in recovering a powerful spiritual and emotional experience.
