4.0 out of 5 stars this is entertainment
if you are expecting top-notch acting then look elsewhere the same can be said of the wafer thin plot as it purely serves the purpose of linking the fights together .
and that is where this film scores big points as the action is very slick and there is plenty of it .
the whole thing rattles along at a frantic pace and you really sont get a chane to get bored...

3.0 out of 5 stars Harmless Popcorn Fun.
Okay DOA is no masterpiece of Cinema but as far as brainless action flicks go DOA does it's job well and is an entertaining 90 minutes of brainless action and humor.

Bottom line is if you are able to sit back and enjoy a movie that is not meant to be taken seriously then you could do far worse then DOA.

4.0 out of 5 stars more than worth a purchase, 8 Jan. 2007
This review is from: Doa: Dead Or Alive [DVD] (DVD)
5 reasons why you should buy this film:

* its got holly valance in it

* its action packed (the martial arts part kinda gives that away...)

* its actually pretty funny

* they base it very well on the game (volleyball and all) i was pleasently surprised

* you're reading the reviews on this page - come on, you're obviously interested ;-)

honest opinion it really is worth a watch if you like the game, like martial arts, or find holly valance to be rather damn hott. or perhaps, like me, all 3 :-D

4.0 out of 5 stars 'IT'S FUN' (Not trying to compete with Martial-art Classics), 17 July 2014

Eye popping action, this martial arts offering is equall to
many that i've seen in terms of enjoyment, only this one
is fun !
The film is of course based on Video - Game.
The Asian martial art films such as 'Crouching tiger' 'Hero'
and 'Flying Daggers' ect are films on a different level.
however this film will give you something a little more
'light' in content.
A group of martial art expert's from different parts of the
globe are drawn to a remote island to compete against
each other for a $10 million cash prize.
Several great fight scenes.
However there is a more sinister reason for the gathering.
This is a better movie than expectations i may have had,
worth a watch.

hassle free transaction - no spoilers

This is no citizen kane. it's not shakespear. It's a fun 90 mins or so.

I'm not familiar with the video game I'm lead to believe it is based on so can't comment on how true to that it is or isn't.

What I can say is that the premise has some parallels with a classic (classic in my book anyway) Enter The Dragon. What the martial arts are THAT good- NO of course not - the STORY is similar - not exact just reminiscent.

So, an easy to follow story. a bit of 'eastern mysticism', bad guys, good guys, fight scenes, emotional bits, explosions, not bad violence not much sex not much bad language, no gadgets reasonable special effect. And of course eye candy. Not a big fan of valance but acted well enough and looked nice enough. the rest of the female 'combatants' also looked pleasing enough and some of the fight scenes were - to me- credibly done.

show stealer/sadness. Roberts stole the show. he doesn't have to overact or anything just his presence elevates a film. Always good to see him but it brings with is sadness. Sadness that he never gets the acclaim he deserves and never made the star status his sister got. And now sad ness that he too is aging and not the martial artist he could once portray.

Is it ridiculous? is it implausible? Yes to all those type of negatives, But it is also fun and escapist and the world makes sense again at the end. Therefore if you need a bit of a lift in your spirits bang this on for 90 mins and enjoy.

ACID TEST: would I buy/watch again or recommend - yes

5.0 out of 5 stars What is there not to like?, 14 Jan. 2007
This review is from: Doa: Dead Or Alive [DVD] (DVD)
It is true that this is not exactly Oscar Winning.

However, it has a group of very attractive girls in little more than bikinis, doing Martial Arts - so what is there not to like about it?

Oddly enough, it is also very close to the original game - which was only made to show off how well they could render computer generated girls. At least in this we have real girls.

Came across this by accident as I did not hear about it at the pictures and took the plunge and got the DVD, as I like the video games it's based on. A great cast, good action and funny moments make the whole 90 mins fly by. If you like the game you will love this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Utter Nonsense, 8 Dec. 2006

But that doesn't have to be a bad thing. If you ask yourself what films are for you get the answer "entertainment", if you don't you are taking them too seriously. If films are just meant to be entertaining then then films that are entertaining should be considered good films.

Such is DoA, It is utter nonsense but entertaining nonsense non the less. Don't expect any thing clever in the way of a plot, don't expect realistic fights and don't even expect any good dialogue. If you can do that then you will enjoy this movie.

I would say it is one of the better game to film conversions mainly because it doesn't take itself to seriously and so keeps the spirit of the game.

As fun as the film is it could be one to rent, there may not be enough to the film to make you want to watch it more than a couple times.
