5.0 out of 5 stars --- Gerry Mulligan --, 31 Aug 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Essential Collection (Audio CD)
Gerry Mulligan was, and still is, my favourite jazz musician of all. I read that his combo was the first to dispense with the piano: Mulligan took the piano lines with his baritone saxophone. His combos usually include the great Chet Baker on trumpet and Carson Smith on bass, as it does on these recordings. They are musicians of the highest standard and Gerry was said to require perfection from them. He and his combo personify the cool, west coast sound on these recordings. The tracks are immensely enjoyable and have easily withstood the test of time. Anyone who is not sure about modern jazz and is thinking of dipping a toe in the water is in safe hands with this music.

I was alerted to this double album by and old school friend and drummer from Liverpool, Ron Parry (catch him on "Play the music of Tadd Dameron", by Geoff Simkins and Dave Cliff!). We were mad about Gerry Mulligan and even hid in the lavatory in the Adelphi, when they played the Philharmonic Hall in the late 50's, so that I could get a poster autographed by them!

The album is a most comprehensive collection of the Mulligan bands from the foundation of the quartet, through to the Tentette and later. Beware, however. This album at its price, is so attractive, you want to share it with other people and I immediately bought one for my sister.

I chose this5 star rating because that's what Gerry Mulligan is as a Baritone sax player
and the fact I am a modern jazz fan and have been for45 years and still think he is the
greatest . If you are a jazz fanatic like me ,Then buy the c.d.you wont be sorry .

Has taken be back to when I first started to love modern jazz. Having transended from rock n roll, to trad, to mainstream and then to modern jazz. this is such a great reminder of that period in my life. I can sing along - as well as air sax - to all the mavellous tunes. A really great record.

She was surprisingly well pleased, as her late mother used to own and play many of the sides when they were on 78's.
