5.0 out of 5 stars Severely underrated
I have to start by saying this movie is really really underrated and people did not quite realise what they were seeing when it first came out.

By the time Rcoky 4 came out in 86, people had grown used to the formula, which was "Rocky trains, Rocky beats big bad opponent in the RING". Many had grown to love this franchise and I sure did do.

Every franchise has a low point, and in this case it's Rocky V.

Rocky is my fav saga and it really is inspiring.

When part 5 came out, people were expecting the same formula and when they didnt get it, they instantly reacted negatively and labelled Rocky 5 a bad movie, worst of the lot. But that's where they made the mistake. You dont judge a movie by whether it follows the same formula as the previous ones.
You judge it solely by the story itself and whetehr the movie can stand alone, even without the previous ones.

In my opinion, Rocky 5 certainly can stand alone and is a terrific movie. One doesnt have to have watched the previous Rockys to enjoy Rocky 5. The story is solid.

I watched Rocky 5 when it came out on vhs in 92 and boy.....did I love this movie. I was really moved by the story of Rocky going broke and losing all he had achieved and how he fights his way back. The betrayal by Tommy made it all the more powerful.

The scene with Mickey in the gym certainly ranks alongside the greatest scenes in movie history. It was original, moving and very very inspiring. Bill contis musical score here made it really special too.
The final street fight in my opinion beats the the other Rocky fights. It was very well choreographed by a talented Stallone who also choreographed all the other fights.

Now come on, let's admit it, almost no other action movie can beat the Rocky 5 street fight. Even the people who hate part 5 admit its a classic street fight.

I told my friend who hated Rocky 5 when he saw it aged 12 to watch it recently and he will get a different view of it because now he's older and more mature. Sure enough, he did enjoy much more and told me he missed seeing the solid story the first time around because back then, like everyone else, he expected another formulaic "Rocky beats massive hulk in the ring" story.

So i urge the people who hate Rocky 5 and have never seen it since 92-94 to watch it again now that they are older. Im sure they will realise what a classic it really is.

I myself love this movie dearly and it's my second fav Rocky. My fav Rocky in order

Rocky 1, 5, 2, 4, 3, 6.

So remember, you dont judge a movie based on whether it follows the same formula or not. You judge it solely by the story, the directing and acting and whether it can stand "alone" without the need for the previous installments. If it can then it's a terrific movie and in my opinion, Rocky 5 certainly is one of them.

As a matter of fact, I'm also a huge collector of action figures and i just recently bought The Rocky 5 set from amazon. Rocky 5 is an unrecognised classic and I urge people to see it now and see what they missed the first time around.

i dont see what all the fuss is about? I thought this rocky was as good as the rest, if not better. he is brought back to the streets where he was born and raised, which creates a 'knock down' effect, giving the family a chance to get up when down, which in all fairness is what rocky is all about. The street fight at the end was in my opinion, the best moment in all the rocky series. joint with rocky vs. mason, and rocky vs. appollo creed II. FANTASTIC DESERVES 6 STARS.

5.0 out of 5 stars ROCKY'S FINAL PUNCH, 18 Nov 2012

Well, they finally made the Rocky 5 movie of STALLONE saying goodbye to his glory days. I guess he got punched too hard on the face by MR.T and DOLPH LUNDGREN, who weren't pretty bad boxers if I say so myself. ROCKY inspired everyone to be the best at what they're good at and never quit no matter what. He'll always be the best boxer with a heart of gold. SEE YA AROUND ROCKO!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Rocky V, 1 Sep 2010
By
This review is from: Rocky 5 [DVD] (DVD)
I would have to say that I really enjoyed this Rocky movie because it did deliver something and for the time I watched it start to finish, I was always glued to the screen.

I have to admit that this film does have a lot of bad errors, especially with Stallone not giving it his best but he does perform at an average pace. I would have liked the Rocky and Tommy Gunn fight to have taken place inside a ring than out on the streets of Philadelphia. Though the fight that took place between Rocky and Gunn was rather entertaining and enjoyable to see.

Overall I reckon this Rocky film could have been better and i am still going to give this Rocky movie a **** because there were some bits of the film that I did like.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite Rocky scene ever, 7 Mar 2010
By
This review is from: Rocky 5 [DVD] (DVD)
Widely seen by many to be the worst of the 6 Rocky films, i have to say that this infact is one of my favourites, the angel on your shoulder scene with Micky has to be my favourite scene in all the Rocky films, I'm also a big fan of the final fight sequence. Yes this film is corny and cliched in many parts, but hey that can be said of the whole Rocky saga, so sit back leave your cynicism and critisism for Rocky iv and enjoy this for what it is.

2.0 out of 5 stars rocky's weakest fight, 4 Jan 2010
This review is from: Rocky 5 [DVD] (DVD)
After the previous 4 great rocky movies came this one, a lackluster effort where rocky doesn't compete in the ring at all you see only flashbacks to other fights in the rocky series. The movie centres around rocky training a young boxer to become a challenger to the title and losing his fortune and trying to cope back in the slums of Philli, the problem with this movie is just there is no spark no life in it there is no conflict for rocky to defeat except his young fighter turning against him. The final street fight just can't compete against the four previous films, stallone is barely understandable at times but shire, young and young sage stallone(who steels the film) are great and the film is well made. Not alot to remember after the film finishes but while it's on it is very watchable, if only stallone did his original ending where rocky dies in his moment of triumph.

3.0 out of 5 stars The weakest link, 9 Oct 2009
This review is from: Rocky 5 [DVD] (DVD)
Every franchise has a low point, and in this case it's Rocky V. Picking up immediately after the big fight at the end of the previous movie, Rocky is in the midst of celebrating his victory over Ivan Drago. But wait, all is not well. His hands start shaking uncontrollably, and he becomes confused and disoriented, apparently confusing Adrian with his dead manager Mickey.

Returning to the States, things only get worse when Rocky finds out his double-dealing attorney has invested his savings in a dodgy property deal and lost everything. He's unable to fight again after a brain scan reveals that years of blocking punches with his head have begun to take their toll. With no other option, Rocky and his family are forced to move back to their old neighbourhood in Philadelphia.

Everything in Rocky's life is going backwards. He reopens Mickey's gym, moves into his old house, and even starts wearing his old clothes. His boxing days seem to be behind him, until one day he's approached by flamboyant boxing promoter George Washington Duke (clearly a parody of Don King) who wants to get him back in the ring despite his brain damage. Rocky refuses, but its obvious Duke won't be put off that easily.

Not long after, Rocky meets a young fighter named Tommy Gunn - he's hungry and eager to prove himself, reminding Rocky of his own humble beginnings. Seeing Gunn's potential, Rocky agrees to train him and it's not long before the victories start to pile up. But Tommy is growing impatient - he wants fame and fortune, and believes Rocky can't get him the big fights he craves. Before long, he's jumped ship with Duke and won the heavyweight title. But still the fans don't respect him, believing he's never fought anyone of Rocky's caliber. Angry and resentful, Gunn confronts Rocky, leading to a street brawl between the two in which Rocky takes a beating, but manages to rally himself and emerge victorious one more time.

Dealing as it does with the waning days of Rocky's career, part five was never going to be a popular entry in the series. I can kind of see what Stallone was trying to do by taking Rocky back to his roots, but this just wasn't the right way to go about it. Rocky isn't the talented young fighter he was back in 1976 - he's been through so much since then that it seems unfair for him to end up back where he started with nothing to show for it. Word has it that Stallone felt the same way, and the poor showing of this movie was one of his major reasons for writing Rocky Balboa.

There's a palpable sense of melancholy about this whole movie. It's the polar opposite of the original Rocky, and that negtive vibe filters through to the viewer like an oil slick. This could have been an inspiring, uplifting film if done properly, but instead it's just dull and depressing. For sixteen long years this was the finale to the Rocky series, and I can only say that I'm very glad Rocky Balboa came along to give the guy a proper send off.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't even bother, skip this installment, 9 Jun 2007

I. Thomson "The music, book and film fanatic" (Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland) - See all my reviews

Sly Stallone makes a big fuss of Rocky V nowadays and rightly so was desperate to get the financial backing for Rocky Balboa instead for the true completion of the series.

Rocky Balboa comes back to America and is quickly diagnosed with brain damage and from his wife's advice, quits boxing. Balboa even loses a lot of his wealth and has to learn to live the hard life in Philadelphia again. He begins to manage a young boxer Tommy Gunn, but ends up salvaging his own son.......

The fifth part is as predictable as it comes. Rocky starts to really suffer on screen and how i'm very surprised it even managed to get into cinemas in the first place, given the script. The story just shows how far it has dipped and this for certain, is a good indication of the fast decline which in my opinion, started to occur in Rocky III. What starts off when Rocky has finished his fight quickly becomes a domestic farce of family obession and as we expect letting the attention of his son's welfare as a father down deliberately. The editing really truly drags as Rocky faces his dismal future of hope with limited happiness but there's never any structure because it never gets anywhere remotely entertaining even with the 110 mins tag with what the boring mudance script offers, including the terrible and rather comedical Mickey flashback scenes which are meant to be serious. A good example of this being just a whole lot of substance and having no real depth not at all. There's no heart, no movitation or dream in this like what was presented in Rocky Balboa. Rocky V is incredibly shallow, very pale, very wearsome and very much evident of the time (gun crime, violence and unemployment triggering the late 80s/early 90s rap scene in USA) hence it's dated feel. The song "The Pleasure of a Man" bares manages to limp over the credits without a groan, after the hacked-on ending and you'll believe it was absolute drivel-because it is, if you ever get to the end!

No wonder this was a favourite with Razzie. AVOID. Forget about this embarrasement and skip to Rocky Balboa to see where Sly had gone wrong previously.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than Rocky 4 and Rocky 3, 13 May 2007
This review is from: Rocky 5 [DVD] (DVD)
The reason Rocky 5 is not so popular, is that people were looking for a sequel to Rocky 4, not another sequel to Rocky 1. Number 5 breaks away from the 80's crap brought to us by the previous 2 sequels. It goes back to its roots of a real story, and they brought the original director back for it. This again has made a drama set in the world of boxing, rather than just a 'boxing movie'. And for people who are just after the action, it actually has more boxing scenes than the other movies, its just Tommy Gunn for most of it instead of the title character, who by the way, was played by Tommy Morrison, who went on to win the World Heavyweight title in real life. The script is solid, the characters have depth and it underlines the corruption that is ruining the sport of boxing. If you really are a fan of either film or boxing, rent the movie again and tell me i'm wrong

3.0 out of 5 stars rocky watered down, 6 Feb 2007

ROCKY 5 released in 1990 brought the story to an unsettling end, well it was the end until some 16 years later rocky balboa was released and we got the ending that we all wanted but for 16 years the saga of rocky ended here and the results werent good enough.

The film starts off from where rocky 4 left off, despite rockys son robert being about 10 years older, and rocky forced to retire due to potential brain damage, rocky also loses all his money due to a dodgy accountant and the story goes full circle and the family return to the slums so to speak.

This was of course unsettling to see rocky back where it started but the problems here start from a poor script which is a bit cliche heavy and the use of the flashbacks with rockys old trainer micky are a bit too cheesey and thats saying something, the film certainly runs out of steam in parts.

The story also centres on young kickstart boxer tommy gunn who gets rocky to train him and gunn has the hunger to rise up through the boxing division and rocky is proud as it feels like rocky is back, when gunn turns against rocky through the help of an agent who is meant to be similar to real life promoter don king, then rocky needs to teach him some manners and as rocky came from the streets he decides to fight gunn on the streets instead of the ring and risk his life.

The film isnt the worst film in the world, hence the 3 stars as i enjoy watching it but i dont live for it like the first four and the newly released rocky movie is also brilliant, but rocky five is a film that left a sour note in manys mind but is still part of the saga so it should never be ignored.
