Average Victorian romantic thriller
on 28 November 2010
I was hoping this might prove to be a collection of Mrs Gaskell's occasional supernatural stories, but I'm afraid I was disappointed: it is a full-length novel, and of a much more prosaic type. The story concerns a rural lawyer, his daughter, and the impact on their lives of an unfortunate incident. It's very well written, quite readable, and has the expected reasonably happy ending, but is a little too sentimental and melodramatic for my tastes. Other readers might well enjoy it more, especially if they enjoy romantic tales. The Kindle edition is pretty good, few typos.
