4.0 out of 5 stars The beautiful Barbara Lewis
Barbara did not record enough music for my liking but this double album completes my collection of her soulful sides.

3.0 out of 5 stars Early soul songstress shines
This CD comprises Barbara's 2 Atlantic releases from the early 1960s. She is a fine example of how emerging female soul singers sounded before Aretha, closer to Pop than to Blues or Gospel. This CD comprises Barbara's 2 Atlantic releases from the early 1960s. She is a fine example of how emerging female soul singers sounded before Aretha, closer to Pop than to Blues or Gospel. The tracks are exquisitely produced by Ollie McLoughlin, and full orchestral arrangements by greats Bert Berns, Mike Terry, Artie Butler, Riley Hampton, Van McCoy,Bob Gallo and Lou Courtney. The Hello Stranger LP has the Mighty Mighty Dells warbling in the background to great effect, especially on the title track, and is largely self penned. The second relies on some top writers, incvluding Tony Hester, later of the Dramatics, Chip Taylor and Deon Jackson. The material on each is strong. Although many of the tracks have provided hits for others down the years Barbara's distinctive delivery makes hers the dfinitive versions - if you like these songs, and I expect that you will, check out her later work on Stax, also well worthwhile.
