5.0 out of 5 stars Very refreshing - an original Horror film with a difference, 17 Oct 2006
This review is from: The Toybox [DVD] (DVD)
Most horror/slasher movies don't care much about subtleties and characterisation, but this was at the heart of what the Toybox set out to do. This film isn't your bog standard slasher, you need to pay attention and concentrate.

The acting was exceptional - but special mention should go to Suzanne Bertish and Heather Chisen who turned in marvellous performances. Also the photography was impressive, it certainly was a lavish production and didn't look low budget.

There have been a lot of British horror movies coming on the scene lately. Do we have a movement in British horror going on? I hope so. And certainly The Toybox is among the best of the present bunch.

Well worth getting for Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars different take on horror, 7 Feb 2008

I really enjoyed the Toybox..it was completely different to what I expected it to be.
Rather than a gross out gore fest the film is a clever tale of descent into madness and how childhood can scar our lives in unimaginable ways.
If this sounds like not being much fun, relax it is.After a slightly slow start the film really racks up the tension to create scenes so tense that you can't bear to look away.
In addition the movie benefits from superb performances, particularly the super slinky Claudine Spiteri ( who needs to be in more movies).
Sound design is excellent, editing and photography first rate. The ending is unforgettable

5.0 out of 5 stars Rural Mayhem Rules!, 9 Feb 2008

I just watched this and am still trying to figure out exactly what I've seen. It starts off sedately, then gets weird, then gets funny, then heads start to roll. This lurches from dark farce to mayhem with a motion that is never less than thoroughly engaging. Some great UK character actors present as well as some promising new faces. A funny, ferocious and very British classic.

When wanabee witch Berenice Usher(Claudine Spiteri)takes new boyfriend Conrad(Craig Henderson) to stay with her family for Christmas, he soon realises that the whole family is completely bonkers. Dad rants and raves about messages he's being sent on the phone and clown pictures he's getting sent in the post, Mum spends the whole time glamming herself up and lusting after Conrad, Gran walks around in her dead husbands clothes and Berenice herself thinks she is the reincarnation of a 10th century witch. Oh, there's also Brian, Berenice's brother, obsessed with the East Anglian folk tales the two siblings used to tell eachother when they were children, and he spends most of the time skulking in the garage, composing music and generally seething away. However, those seemingly harmless childhood games can leave psychological scars, as the house of Usher is about to find out.
This unusual British horror is a very low budget cross between The Anniversary and a backwoods slasher. There's a sprinkling of many other genres also thrown into the mix. Its a mix that doesn't always work, but the film has a style all of its own and works despite its various shortcomings. This is mainly due to its unique visuals, fine camera work and whole hearted performances from the cast. I'm not sure who to recommend this film to though as it criss crosses genres so many times as it progresses, it seems unaware of its target audience. I think lovers of British psychological horror, who pay no heed to a films lowly budget, should enjoy it a lot. I did anyway. 4 out of 5
