Historically, National Trust videos on DVD and VHS have always disappointed me. I think that they often failed to do justice to the incredible properties managed by the National Trust and the history they embody. They also tended to suffer from poor replication quality, and very often you found they had been made years before.

By contrast this latest series of DVDs is an absolute joy, it's been shot during 2006 in high definition and is breathtaking in quality and content. I hugely recommend the whole series to heritage fans.

This episode features Batemans the Sussex house in which writer and journalist, Rudyard Kipling, chose to spend his latter years. The programme tells Kipling's story, his origins and rise to fame and fortune and how he came to settle at Batemans. Then, it gives extensive views of the house's exterior and interior, including sublime aerial views of the house and its setting. It revisits local places that Kipling knew well, some of which he included in stories.

The programe also features interviews with National Trust experts and - very importantly - with those who know the house best, the NT staff who are the current managers. Heritage video doesn't get any better than this.

The DVD is narrated with authority and clarity, as is all this series, by Nigel Havers. This is one of a series of ten DVDs. If you're a heritage fan, be sure to see them all.
