Reviewed history is better than quickly or lightly assembled documentary and current affair history. AJP Taylor is a legendary writer of quirky history, considered by some as "an extravagant controversialist" and by others as exemplary. He had a gift of the telling phrase, the cutting summation, the sweep for balance, the depth of true analysis. His approach is/was instinctive in dissenting from orthodoxy, detached from constraints , predilections, biases.He pricked balloons of self-satisfaction and careerist egos alike, te results here being accessible, fresh and relevant, full of wisdom without pomp and righteousness, certain and persuasive, if open to challenge and re-assessment. He devoted his career to not merely having a rut of a career. Good for that, for seeking truth without fear or favour is the heart of history as surely as it is foreign to many political subjects discussed and analysed by Taylor. A must.
