This is a fine collection of songs from Nickel Creek's three albums, together with a couple of unreleased live tracks, plus a bonus DVD containing all (I think) of the promotional videos they've made. A lot has already been written about the history of the band (they began playing together when they were only children, and are still frighteningly young) and their skill (Chris Thile is possibly the best mandolin player in the world, but Sean and Sara Watkins are no slouches either). The music is derived from bluegrass, but with the addition of many modern influences, which come to the fore in the tracks off their most recent album. Great singing, playing and writing - in fact, the only bad thing about this band is that they're apparently on the verge of breaking up, which is a shame. In the mean time, this collection is a perfect introduction to their music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, Videos for the completist, 15 Dec 2006
This review is from: Reasons Why: The Very Best (Audio CD)
For the uninitiated, Nickel Creek are a 3-piece band (Chris Thile - mandolin, Sean Watkins - guitar and Sara Watkins - fiddle) who are usually augmented by a double bass player.

Originally arising from the bluegrass and folk music scene they have become much more as they have developed. All three players are of a virtuoso standard on their instruments, but they rarely ever seem to let this get in the way of playing songs. With three lead vocalists they produce a wide variety of material to suit each one and yet retain a certain core sound.

If you are tired of pulsating dance rhythms, over produced electronic pop or uninspired rock then Nickel Creek could well be the band for you...they were for me.

This collection is an excellent introduction to the band. Two live tracks are included on the CD, which to be frank have not been well recorded, but don't let this put you off the rest of the CD.

For those who already have the studio albums from which these tracks are taken then really this is only really worth viewing as a purchase in order to get the music videos. As a bonus you get a compilation mix CD with a couple of dodgy live tracks.

This album is absolutely incredible and a grat album as an inroduction to their work. their other non-greatest hits albums are still very worth getting but this is a good start to it all. so good in fact that after i bought this several years ago, i bought this album as a christmas present this year for a friend to introduce them to the amazing Nickel Creek.
