4.0 out of 5 stars southern rockers, 15 Jan 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Definitive Rock: Black Oak Arkansas (Audio CD)
Great priced compilation from an under rated country/rock/boogie band with a distinctive gravelly vocal of Jim Dandy Mangrum and twin guitars; if you like Skynyrd, Hatchet or ZZ Top you'll have a blast listening to this. Worth the money for 'Jim Dandy'; stand out tracks include 'Son of a Gun', 'Taxman' & 'Back Door Man'; shame their cover of ZZ Top's 'La Grange' wasn't included (would have given 5 stars).

4.0 out of 5 stars Good ol' southern blues rock, 20 Jun 2011

An excellent collection of their early material, taking them from nutty country rock to the threshold of a unique and quirky heavy metal sound.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hey Ya'll - do you like 70's Southern rock ?, 26 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Definitive Rock: Black Oak Arkansas (Audio CD)
This is really a definitive collection of 29 tracks from this once very popular 70's southern rock band. It is a rather mixed selection and to be honest not all the tracks are absolute classics and on some of them Jim "Dandy" Mangrum's vocals do sound a bit strained and off key.
However there are some absolute belters such as Hey Ya'll, Jim Dandy, Gravel Roads and When Electricity came to Arakansas. On balance the great tracks far outweigh the mediocre ones and it is well worth the money if you love 70's rock.
