I loved this game so much i couldn't put it down until i completed it. I think it has the best graphics for a game on the ds. This is a great game for all ages if you like the colourful graphics and customising your vey own robot which you use to fight with. I'm still playing it even though i have completed it. It is also great for online play. i recommend you buy this, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing..., 26 July 2009

I bought this game, and am AMAZED by it. The map gameplay is like a steriotypical RPG, and its graphical appeal is as others have said similar to 'Pokemon'. One previous review stated that it had little "replay value", however this is untrue. There are well over 100 different parts and therefor over 500 different combinations of robo, as well as an uncountable amount of ingame weapon combos.

Like the best games its easy to get the hang of but hard to master.

To conclude i will state my one dissapointment. This game is underated. The wifi is frequently empty of opposition, although if you wait long enough generaly someone will turn up. If you get this game and like it REVIEW it. This game needs all the support it can get!

This game is like an action packed Pokemon with an involving storyline, its stunning graphics are one of the best on DS. Robo Arena has some of the most addictive gameplay on the DS.

Worse than: Pokemon Diamond
Better than: Metroid Prime Hunters

Graphics: 9/10
Gameplay: 8/10
Fun: 8/10

Overall rating: 85%

4.0 out of 5 stars A good action game. A bad RPG., 7 Feb 2010

I bought this game on a whim and have played it through to completion. It's by no means a perfect game but was good enough to keep me coming back. I'll begin by adressing the flaws:

Firstly the game suffers a lot from "oh but you must" syndrome, whereby you're presented with supposed choices but if you pick the option the game doesn't want you to it'll just keep asking in a loop until you provide the 'correct' answer (or it'll ignore your response entirely and carry on anyway). This is a pretty dated problem that I hadn't really encountered much of since the days of the NES - at times it can be outright amusing but it does detract from the already flimsy illusion of choice in the game.

This lack of choice is further aggravated by the times when you're simply not able to perform an obvious task. For example at the start of the game you're given a mobile phone but whenever you need to contact the police or other characters you can't use it - you can bring it up in a menu and examine it but never actually use it - as far as I can tell you're given it to receive about 2 phonecalls that advance the plot during the entire game. These are small complaints but they really start to mount up as the already absurd plot unfolds.

Secondly the game presents itself as an RPG (the over-world game strongly resembles the Pokemon franchise) but there is no levelling up or improvement in skills beyond the benefits of practice. The idea is that as you progress more parts become available with which to customise your robo, but in reality the new parts aren't any better than the old, I completed the entire game (and extra parts after the credits) using pretty much the same old parts throughout. As such you're just as equipped to beat the final boss at the start of the game as you are at the end which kills the sense of progress a bit.

Related to this is the fact that the game is forever emphasising how you should choose different set-ups to counter your oponents robo, but in reality I found that my one set up (comprised almost entirely of parts acquired at the start of the game) worked perfectly well against every opponent through to the final battle. It can be fun to play with new combinations but you'll soon find yourself returning to the handful of parts that are actually effective.

All of this said the game really shines when you get to the battles. At this point the game switches from the standard RPG 'walk around talking to people' mode to 3D real-time fighting and starts to feel truly unique. This is where the entertainment is, there's a decent variety of 'arenas' to fight in and the option for online play only expands the fun of these battles.

There's a lot of fun to be had in this game, but there are also a fair few frustrations - essentially it's a good action game surrounded by a poor RPG. There's certainly scope for a sequel to iron out the wrinkles and be a truly excellent game.
