Funnel Cloud is a pretty and dreamy album, with a sad, nostalgic mood. Stylewise it seems more akin to their Eveningland album, with more 'country' than their 'folky' Rabbitsongs album. Funnel Cloud has lovely instrumentals and smokey vocals. I would have liked more variation in tempo between the songs - perhaps a few more upbeat numbers to intersperse the sad, dreamy songs - hearing too many slow/sad numbers with orchestrals on one album can make me feel a bit morose - and it does not have enough mandolin going on - I really love the mandolin playing style - but I wanted more. I was hoping for some fun numbers equivalent to 'Tennessee Waltz' or 'Horsey' from previous albums. Funnel Cloud is good late-night listening - and Hem can't really do any wrong - its a polished and beautiful listen if you are in a wistful mood.
