4.0 out of 5 stars Top Gun For The Army
This is a fair to middle dvd you put on when a bloke wants just to sit back and dream of doing something like blowing up stuff! Tommy Lee Jones is great in this film as an old warhorse refused to go on operations and Nicolas Cage is the new young upcoming arial assassin and protogee to Tommy, with and old flame returns to stir things up on the side Sean Young. All in all...

Topgun in helicopters.

Thats it. That tells you all you need to know! The plot line is incredibly similar. Young talented pilot, starts out well, has to go through a period of trial and self doubt, emerges to go to war and be a hero in battle. Picks up girl along the way.

The one standout feature of this film is Tommy Lee Jones: He has some absolutely fantastic one-liners in this film. He gets 110% out of the script and turns in a fine performance. While everyone else in the film is bland, his role is actually quite developed, with some great comic moments, some drama, and an actually rather well portrayed personal-life of being a man moving into middle age.

The air to air sequences are fantastic. The whole thing is absolutely unashamedly patriotic. There is no deep moral analysis of the rights and wrongs of war. This is a gung-ho movie from start to finish.

Definitely worth a watch over a couple of beers with the lads, although it has sadly dated now.

3.0 out of 5 stars FIRE AND FORGET!, 25 Oct. 2012
This review is from: Wings Of The Apache [DVD] (DVD)
I remember seeing this in Canada way back in 1990 as Fire Birds. Then it limped out over here as Wings of the Apache. The other reviews hit the nail on the head, this is Top Gun with helicopters......... but not as good, infact it's so bad it's watchable for all the wrong reasons. Nic Cage's performance is so insane there is no way he should be let loose with a flying killing machine. He seems to be acting in a completly different movie like he belongs in a Elvis movie. Sean Young's performance seems to be like she is reading off que cards and both Young's and Cage chemestry is so wooden you just sit back and watch the splinters fly. The only one who seems to put in a performance is Tommy Lee Jones, but although this movie was filmed three years before The Fugitive he basicaly gives the same performance (not a bad thing) the plot is paper thin as America take on the Drug Cartel and have to go up against their best and most evil pilot. No guessing where this is leading. The flying sequences are good and pretty well staged, but over relient on duplicating the same shots. This film also contains one of the most lame motar attacks ever staged it's so obviouse they are fake. With a movie that has little tension, poorly written characters, no story and some of the dumbest strangest diologue, it's almost impossible to give a damn.
just watch and forget the moment it's finished and to top it all off Phil Collins is on the sound track. As a film it was dated in 1990 now it's tragic, it's so bad it's just about watchable with all it's terrible flag waveing patriotism and Cage's beetle black hair colouring.
Fire and Forget!
See if you liked......

Red Dawn.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm your mother now..., 25 Mar. 2014
This review is from: Wings Of The Apache [DVD] (DVD)
The U.S. Government is willing to help any country that requires help in ridding themselves of drugs with support from the Army.

Unfortunately, the drug cartels have countered that offer by hiring one of the best air-combat mercenaries and have armed him with a Scorpion attack helicopter.

The army decides to send in it's best people from it's Apache Air Combat school.

But first they have to be taught how to fly air-to-air combat missions..

So the films not Top Gun, many people have said that, but it's not supposed to be that movie, this has Cage for crying out loud, and just when you thought he was going to put in a restraint performance, he goes balls to the wall.

Yes, the story isn't great, and the film is laughable toward the end with it's dodgy explosions and awful dialogue, but it's endearing rubbish, that doesn't last for long, and is quite enjoyable whilst it lasts.

Jones puts in another great performance, as does Cage, even though it's by the numbers stuff. Young is awful and thankfully her screen time just consists of her knocking back Cage, and shouting at him.

as I said before, it's no award winner by a mile, but switch your brain off and you could do a lot worse with ninety.

At least it's unintentionally funny.

This must have been made right after they watched Topgun. It has almost the same storyline but rotor beats fixed wing and the bad guy gets it in the end> It just goes to show that druglords can't win and good triumphs over evil !!!!. There are a couple of decent actors in this film but I think that Tommy Lee Jones and Nicolas Cage must have been conned into doing this film as they usually star in far better films. A good film to watch with the kids but not much else about it.

This film is good. All involved play their parts well. What you get is a feel-good, american hero, let's kill the drug lord kinda film.

Good action, explosions, arrogant young pilot who comes good. A love interest. All the ingredients of Top Gun, but without Tom Cruise.
Better, in my opinion.

And Amazon, please list this as Fire Birds. It makes no sense having two listings for the same product.

Another classic military fantasy film of my youth, with a young Nic cage getting some revenge on the nasty communist mercenary supported south american drug lords that killed his comrades, whilst show boating 'americas deadliest military killing machine'

'I AM THE GREASTEST' and womens panties on your head

Remeber watching this when Sky first came out. Got played to death by sky but I loved this film. been looking for it for a while on dvd format and am glad I found it. Such a cheesy film but considering this, the aerial Apache scenes make up for this. not exactly Oscar winning acting but still a great film
