4.0 out of 5 stars Good/cute little telescope :3, 2 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Celestron NexStar 5 SE Computerised Telescope (Electronics)
Length:: 3:02 Mins

Attached it a video of Jupiter using a cheap 2x barlow about £25 and a 8mm televue eyepiece(quite expensive, i payed 45 used) but a normal celestron will do the same job.

The scope: I bought this because i was sick of using a manual telescope and my 130eq wasn't good enough

Pros
Compact: can easily be travelled and isn't heavy to pick up, i can pick up the whole setup with one hand!
Xlt coatings means better contrast, so visuals are amazing even if it gets dusty or dirty on the lens/mirrors
Non manual, good for impatient people like me who can't be bothered to move the scope manually
Can see rings of saturn, bands of jupiter, highly details images of the moons surface and can see faint object such as andromeda galaxy and orion nebulae

Cons
Power, it eats up 8 AA batteries or you can spend ages finding somekind of power supply that goes with it
Is not intended for people who don't know much about the hobby, i broke my glass lens taking it apart to clean(please don't bother doing that)
although visuals are excellent please don't expect hd quality visuals of galaxies unless you live miles away from street lights

Highly recommended if you know what you are doing and you have the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Starter Astro scope, 1 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Celestron NexStar 5 SE Computerised Telescope (Electronics)
I am a beginner to Astronomy and this is the perfect scope to get started. I found it very easy to set up with very little knowledge of Astronomy.

As a suggestion to get started, use the 3 star alignment, its really simple. Within 10 minutes I was up and running with a whole queue of people wanting to have a look. Great fun! The presets work great too.

Downside is that is weighs around 16kg including the tripod, but it fits nicely into my large rucksack, and I can tie the tripod onto the back of my Bike and cycle off somewhere with it.

To do astro photography with it, you will need the universal T Ring adaptor and T-Ring for your dslr camera, then learn how to do a polar alignment. I've not yet worked out how to do that properly because I am a noob, and the weathers not been so great either, but I think drift align is what you need to do, and maybe interface with a laptop to get spot on accuracy.

I've now gone on to buy the Eye piece and filter kit for it for better magnification and viewing pleasure..

Really happy with it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Pleased, 15 Feb. 2013

A good powerful telescope on a solid tripod. Found the finder scope a bit cheap and nasty and not very secure. Overall, with a few good lenses, this is an excellent telescope.
