Jarvis Cocker. Bobby Gillespie. Thurston Moore. None of these people have their own music featured on this compilation, but they are amongst the many, varied individuals whose selections are featured herein.

As part of their 30th anniversary celebrations (see also Rough Trade Shops: Counter Culture 06 and Rough Trade Shops: Counter Culture 76), Rough Trade Shops asked a selection of their exciting clientele to suggest tracks that they had bought from those hallowed premises over the preceding three decades. So it came to pass that 30 tracks were chosen by 30 well-listened folk, including rocks stars, label bosses, artists, comedians and a farmer called Spazom.

The eventual tracklist is as varied as one could wish, and laid out in chronological order of release, from The Modern Lovers' laconic `Pablo Picasso' to LCD Soundsystem's bouncy `Losing My Edge'. Sandwiched between these can be found the wiry punk of Bikini Kill, the furious lunacy of Lard, Afrika Bambaataa's unhinged electrofunk, Karen Dalton's raw and affecting blues, The Carter Family's down-home country, a delightfully odd electronic Smiths cover from Schneider TM...

Suffice to say, there is more going on here than in the average compilation. One would expect nothing less from Rough Trade Shops, who had already proven themselves to be masters of the compiler's art by this point, and their curation of this project does not disappoint in any way. Even the packaging is top quality, the liner notes filled with photographs and pocket biographies for the bands and contributors alike.

Anyone with an interest in the history of alternative music, or those who simply relish a diverse collection of musical riches, can purchase this item with confidence and listen with joy.
