4.0 out of 5 stars American country folk roots music with ciggie gruff voice, 8 Feb. 2007
This review is from: Song Of The Blackbird (Audio CD)
Saw this guy support, and better, Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan the other week. Just one guy alone on stage with a banjo, acoustic guitar and a stomping foot. Add on top a growling voice singing of booze, redemption, bad cops and religion. Great 'tache and tattoos as well. The man was a dude and had a warm rapport with the crowd.

Bought this cd the next day and have played it a few times. Quite short at just over 30 mins but there's certainly no filler so all the better for it. His sparce stage sound is bolstered on some tracks by a full band but never rocks out or smothers the main attraction. Just adds a deeper warmth to the wounded sound. Other tracks have a creaking ambience backing the banjo/guitar and voice.

I suppose you could liken the voice to Mark Lanegan or Tom Waits (but not as gutteral as TW).

I'm a sucker for that gritty good times/bad times sound, played late at night when drunk or fresh as a daisy doing a groaning stomp in your front room.

If that sounds like you then give William Elliot Whitmore a try. Like he says, he'll sure 'preciate it.
