Not as cheap as it appears for three films
on 23 November 2012
As will be obvious from reviews on Amazon.com, Helen Hayes appears as Miss Marple in only two of these films. In Murder is Easy (not a Miss Marple book in any event), she appears for the sole purpose get herself killed at the beginning, after passing on her suspicions about some curiously coincidental deaths in her village to Bill Bixby. The remainder of the film I found a bit cheesy and the acting fairly poor.
As to the other two - well they're okay. Perhaps it's unfair to compare Helen Hayes with Joan Hickson or even Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie as, for some irrational reason, an American playing the role of an archetypal English spinster grates on me. I also found the acting generally somewhat facile and the characters inconvincing but perhaps this is because it was made with American tastes in mind. Or maybe it's because nobody - but nobody - has ever done Marple better than Hickson.
Be warned if buying this for UK use - the note that Customs may examine the parcel for value should be taken seriously. Mine was ripped open and I had to pay an additional £11.40 to collect it from the Royal Mail depot. Over £30 for three Marple films is not so cheap after all....
