5.0 out of 5 stars Not your average Wayne, 11 Oct 2011

This review is from: Three Faces West & Shepherd of the Hills (John Wayne) [DVD] (DVD)
Both these movies are full of optimism, and show John Wayne could do more than the average western
Both have unusual stories..with great supporting cast
The color and photography in "SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS" is particularly worth noting,
and CHARLES COBURNS performance in three faces west is heart felt and warming.
The story being extremely patriotic, being made during the early days of W.W.2
A most enjoyable double bill..picture and sound quality are very good

Brilliant made me smile. It was dispatched very quickly which impressed me. The film was a long one but was typically John Wayne,

Shepherd of the Hills is not your average John Wayne fare, but a gentle little Western set amid some spectacular scenery in the Ozark mountains (I'm not sure exactly where they are, but they're lovely anyway!) The story is unremarkable, and the pace slow, but there are some good performances here, particularly from the lovely and talented Betty Field, the heroine of the piece. The pretty colour came as a nice surprise too - unexpected in a relatively early John Wayne film. I haven't watched Three Faces West yet, but on a quick skim through, it also looks out of the mould for the 'Duke' but seems quite entertaining. (Black and white sadly). In summary, this double feature is a real bargain buy, and not just for John Wayne fans.
