4.0 out of 5 stars A Unique Singer/Songwriter, 13 Nov. 2006
This review is from: Rendezvous In Rio (Audio CD)
I've loved the music of Michael Franks since being introduced to him in the mid-eighties via 'Skin Dive' and I've bought every album since. You know what you're getting with him and 'Rendezvous In Rio' is a title you might predict if you were to try and come up with one for him!

The few people I've encountered who know his music have often recommended artists they consider to be similar, like Ben Sidran but I've always considered Michael Franks to be pretty unique.

On this new album he continues to be influenced by the music of Brazil, particularly the much missed Jobim. There's a lot of easy listening jazz too. I've found this album to be a real grower, 'Under The Sun' sets the mood perfectly and could be on any of his previous albums from the past 10 years or more but guess what, it's great. The title track continues this mood as does 'Samba de Soho'. His love of jazz is covered with 'The Cool School', 'Scatsville' and 'Hearing "Take Five." My favourite track on the album is 'The Chemistry Of Love.'

'Rendezvous In Rio' won't surprise anyone who's heard any of his previous albums, but few others are doing what Michael Franks does so please, don't change.

Michael Franks is a genius and like most geniuses he can sometimes misfire, however on this album he's on good form. This is his debut release for a new record label and he still inspires with that lazy vocal style of his continually twisting that laid back vocal of his around some of the most wordy of lyrics you will ever hear!
There are various musical styles on this album but the two Brazilian sambas work particularly well for me Rendezvous in Rio and Samba do Soho are really entertaining. There is a change of pace on the autobiographical Cool School but never the less it's a lovely song.
Accompanied by some astounding Jazz musicians such as Jeff Lorber, Jimmy Haslip, Chuck Loeb and Alex Al this homage to Brazil is highly recommended.
