3.0 out of 5 stars not that good
My previous straighteners were salon ones (got them via my hairdresser) and were brilliant. After reading the rave reviews of these I was slightly disappointed. They're ok but not brilliant. The cordless function however is great, well worth it but a bit gimicky as the straighteners themselves aren't great, but at half the price of most shops, can't complain too much...

5.0 out of 5 stars Babyliss Freedom Straighteners, 7 Dec 2006
This review is from: BaByliss 2099U Total Freedom 230 Cordless Straightener (Personal Care)
I have to say I was rather sceptical, at first, that these would actually do the job. However, I am extremely pleased with the results these straighteners produce.

I have thick wavy, frizzy hair which for the past 4 years has been tamed by GHDs. I have always stuck to them believing them to be the cream of the crop and that nothing else could match their capabilities. So, after 4 years and 4 pairs of GHDs (the years warranty on them usually runs out when the life of them is up - £400 down the drain) I decided enough was enough.

I took the plunge and bought these. My decision was partially influenced by my mother's Babyliss 230 Pro, but I wanted to go a step further. For £29.99 you can't beat them. My hair has gone from frizzy and static to sleek and straight this week and I am super impressed.

These are more user friendly than the 230 Pros as there is no on/off switch. You simply plug them in, the red light tells you there is power and the green light stops flashing when up to temperature. You just unplug them when you are done. I have yet to use the cordless feature (which isn't an important factor if you ask me). The plates are wider than GHDs so you straighten more hair in less time.

I found I only had to repeat a section of hair a maximum of 3 times. I use them on the highest temperature setting of 230, but I find this a little hotter than GHD's (which also, they say, heat to 230).

There is a grip for your thumb just above the flashing LEDs and the cord is a good length if you need to travel with them.

Overall, a quality pair of straighteners. I am not in marketing/advertising/selling, I am just a teacher who needs their hair to behave!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't live without!!, 12 July 2007

I read a lot of reviews before I purchased the BaByliss Cordless Straighteners and having already been let down by GHDs (dodgy wiring) and Remington (dodgy thermostat) was a bit dubious about spending more money on another failed product. How wrong I was. This product has been made extremely well with choice of using directly from the mains or from the cordless base. They are super fast to heat up and the plates glide easily through the hair without any nipping (as some other straighteners can do).

Be really careful using on one of the highest heat settings as this product can become hotter than the sun!!

5.0 out of 5 stars BaByliss 2099U Total Freedom 230 Cordless Straightener Review, 13 May 2007

I got these straighteners when my GHDs broke after 9 months of use as an "in between" pair while I was waiting for my GHDs to be repaired/replaced. I have majorly curly/uncontrollable hair and after 3 days of having no straighteners I was being driven to distraction without any kind of styling method apart hairdryer and massive ammounts of hair products which were useless.

So I had a search online and found these Babyliss 2099U straighteners on Amazon for 1/2 the price I could anywhere else so thought £50 straighteners for 1/2 price and another 5% off with NUS...? Yes please! So I ordered them and 4 days later (3 days earlier than I expected to recieve them) they arrived!! They arrived in a very big box with the straighteners in their packaging padded out inside. Not sure why the big box, but anyway, they were here!

Inside the box were the straighteners, the stand for heating up, mains wire and the instruction booklet/guarentee (which is 3 years). I plugged in the mains wire into the stand, popped the straighteners in the stand, switched them on and waited for them to heat up. about a minute later they were at 230 degrees (i'd set them that hot, you can choose anywhere between 150 and 230) and so I had a go at straightening. I found them to be just as good as my GHDs were. My hair was just as straight and it took just as much/little effort as GHDs. The plates are slightly wider and the outsides of them are slightly furry, I suppose to protect from the heat. After washing and drying my hair to rid of all the products in it from the past few days I straightened all my hair. The effect was identical to GHD. I found having to put the straighteners back in the stand every few minutes to heat up again a bit irritating so I just plugged the wire straight into the straighteners so it would work without the stand. Good to have the wireless option though. The on/off switch is only on the stand though so to switch the straighteners off when they're wired straight from the mains you have to unplug them. My hair stayed straight most of the next 24 hours. The ends flicked up a bit and it went a bit wild overnight but the same used to happen with my GHDs. My naturally curly hair fights back hard and flicks up at the ends, even with GHDs. I'm sure with a dose of hairspray it would stay ruler straight longer.

Anyway, so far I do recommend them. I haven't had any problems with my hair being burnt or singed. I guess it depends on your hair type and condition. I used L'oreal hot & straight cream on my hair to protect it and it has helped keep it straighter I've found. For £25 I think they're a bargin!!

Ive had this product for over a few months now.

I normally have straight/wavy hair and probably only straightened my hair a few times (in my whole life) with my friend's GHDs before i got this one. It works instantly, i only have to put it through my hair once and it does the job! my friend now comes round to use mines sometime!

My sister on the other hand, has really thick and curly hair, and with the 230 temp. setting it worked instantly too! her hair's really long too, and she loved the end result.

It can be used as cordless or with cord (which i prefer), but it does heat up within seconds when used in the cordless form. It has nice non-insulation material at the top, so hands never get hot etc.

There is no "smell" or "singe of colour" at all! i think if some people use it excessively, or just keep it on the hair for a long time, i guess that would cause these unfortunate events.

All in all, a fantastic product and amaaazing value for money!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Value, 26 Feb 2008
This review is from: BaByliss 2099U Total Freedom 230 Cordless Straightener (Personal Care)
I've had these straighteners for 2 years now and they are still working perfectly. I still can't believe they cost so little and do such a great job. My friends and relations who bought GHDs are all kicking themselves, as my cheapie Babyliss ones are just as effective, with a cordless option to boot. With reference to the poor review about daughter's singed hair - anything this hot will certainly do harm if used excessively or at full heat on fine hair. I have thick hair, quite coarse at the back and do sometimes notice a singed smell, which washes out. If I didn't use them at the maximum temperature, then I wouldn't achieve straight hair. Ideal for those with mid to long, thick, coarse hair and an absolute steal!!

I ordered these based on the great reviews of other customers and I'm so glad I did! They are just as good as GHD's and for £19.99 amazing value for money! They take literelly 10 seconds to heat up whereas my old ones took about 20 mins and didn't do a good job. As another review said, if you're wondering if you should get these or not - Go for it! You wont regret it :) 5 star product!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than GHD, Quicker and better value!, 24 Feb 2007
This review is from: BaByliss 2099U Total Freedom 230 Cordless Straightener (Personal Care)
I love my curly hair, but on occassion I like to have it straight.

I adored my Mark Hill Morphy Richards Thermoceramic straighteners, and had had them ever since my husband bought them for me two years ago. However, they were taking longer to heat up and never really made my hair straight enough. By the middle of the day, my hair was in between straight and curly, which is not a good look.

Anyway, my sister in law straightened my hair with her GHD's and I suddenly started yearning for them, but seeing the prices, I came online and found these beauties. They are even BETTER.

They have a cordless function, which, like many other reviewers, isn't my primary concern. Not only that but my hair- which I consider to be incredibly difficult STAYS STRAIGHT!

One tip I would give is that all straighteners damage hair if you aren't careful. Using a heat protection spray isn't enough. You need to gauge what temperature your hair needs, mine is curly but 190 is usually enough for me. You don't keep the heat focussed on one piece of hair for too long and twice a week I use a deep repair treatment, even though I don't always straighten it. Also, you need to give your hair a break every now and again, curly hair is beautiful too!

All in all, these really are great. It takes maybe five-ten minutes to do my hair properly.

Well done Babyliss!

I have had GHD's for nearly 5 years now and thought I would never be able to live without them. WRONG, used these Babyliss straighteners for the first time this morning & totally impressed. Apart from being slightly broader and heavier than GHD, these do just the same job. Definately worth the money and really glad that I bought them!...

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Tongs, 10 Feb 2009

This review is from: BaByliss 2099U Total Freedom 230 Cordless Straightener (Personal Care)
I don't know if they really are tongs - I'm a balding bloke and have limited experience in this area. I bought them for my wife after she hinted at how she loved her sister's straighteners. Their mobile nature has been very liberating after years of being confined to 1.2 metres of a socket, but the down side is the extra wear and tear on the carpet as she wanders around without a curly care in the world. All in all, my wife is very happy with the straighteners - heat, ergonomics, style, price (oh she loved the price!). Thoroughly recommended.

One word for these - FANTASTIC - after my GHD's breaking down with that common wiring fault I was in a panic as I cant cope without any straightners - after reading the reviews I purchased these babyliss ones and the next day delivery. At 8am that next day the straightners were infront of me. They are fantastic to use and get really hot and if I am being completely honest they do a better job on my hair than the GDH's, my hair is completely straight and for less than half the price of GHD's, they are well worth the money and recommend anyone to buy them - I have used them with and without the wire and although the plates are wider they are still easy to use. BUY THEM!!!
