Pirates of Tortuga is chiefly of interest today as an example of how, even in the early sixties, the studio infrastructure could lend even cheap programmers lavish production values. True, most of the sea battles are stock footage from The Black Swan, but the standing backlot sets at Fox give this Sam Katzman quickie a fairly lavish look. Shame it never finds much interesting use to put them to, with the third-rate cast failing to provide any color to offset the clichés, although it does offer a rare opportunity to hear the oft-dubbed John Richardson, the Clive Owen of his day (looked like a movie star, acted like a plank of wood), use his own voice in a supporting role. Once the bookies favorite to take over the role from Sean Connery, just be grateful that George Lazenby got to play James Bond instead!

Fox's DVD offers a good enough 2.35:1 widescreen transfer and includes the original theatrical trailer.

During the French wars, England used privateers to protect their trade routes. One of these was Morgan. However, after the war finished, he went pirating and attacked any ships that were heading for the West Indies. England sent out a single ship to destroy Tortuga, the pirates island retreat. After a number of battles between the sailing ships, Morgan is defeated. This is the forerunner of the Pirates of the Carribean movies.

1.0 out of 5 stars wot absolute rubbish!, 16 Dec. 2014

Absolute garbage!

Bad storyline, ridiculous set, hopeless cast and terrible acting!

How did this mockery ever find its way to be called a movie l shall never understand. The acting is so amateurish that a primary school children's stage play will merit an infinitely higher applause!

It could not have cost more than £30 or £40 to make this whole silliness, including the 'actors' salary!
Terrible, absolutely terrible! Shame on whoever spawned this nonsense!

Don't buy it, its a complete waste of money!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Even Max is dull in this., 1 Jun. 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a dull swashbuckler featuring a bland performance from leading man Ken Scott. The fights are poorly staged and the best bits are stockfootage from other films. The one star is for the excellent print and for an appearance by British film's forgotten hero Maxwell Reed who, unfortunately, fails to lift this out of the rut.

5.0 out of 5 stars every thing's great, 5 Feb. 2012

The movie is great, vas also very good prise. I wonder how people made it without computers with all those battles. The movie is very well digitally remastered, to tone is also very well modernised. Thanks a lot to them who cares of us, collectioners and produce such movies on DVDs.
