Sinatra acts dour and drudgy well, with a good ensemble cast- but all are hamstrung by the script. Robert Duvall is among the support players. It almost feels like a Columbo script in New York.
Lee Remick is excellent with a "juicy" womans role , Sinatras estranged wife- the best played part of the script, not that the writing helps the actors too much- they are good despite it , not because of it. (This may have had personal undertones for Sinatra in view of his divorce from Mia Farrow...).
The main "case" and how it develops just appears absurd now.
Nearly a waste of talent redeemed by the conviction of the ensemble, and one hearfelt "speech" from Sinatra about the rich exploiting the slum tenants. Script 2, Cast 3 and Lee Remick 4 out of 5

I have not much to write as this is an excellent film...you do need a strong stomach for some of the content but remember when it was made people had strong feelings about this subject.....not like today...I only wish he had made more films about issues also a good comedy...as he always wanted to be funny... so please watch this thriller you will enjoy and of course there is a love story there as well....orange22.

Frank Sinatra plays the title's detective with a commendably no nonsense approach but he is so aware of his effect on women, especially in that last scene with lovely Jacqueline Bisset that if I were a woman I'd have been on my guard. The movie has some solid sequences, and Lee Remick is one of the most beautiful women I have ever had the pleasure to watch on the screen but the ending is flat at best if not downright contradictory...

This is a great item and I would most certainly recommend it to others.
It is worth every penny paid for it.
