New design, not as good as the original Garmin design
on 4 June 2015
Looking through the reviews here there seem to be huge variations on what people get when buying this item, depending on which seller they have bought this item from. Mine came from Amazon itself (not a marketplace or fulfilled-by-Amazon seller) and was a genuine, new in a Garmin box Garmin spare part and included the round sticky disc which you can stick to any reasonably flat surface so you can attach the sucker mount to that rather than the windscreen.
Please note that the item offered here is only the sucker mount / ball portion of the mount, exactly as pictured. It is made available on the assumption that you still have the clip-in cradle / socket part of the mount, but have damaged or lost the sucker mount part and just want to replace that part, rather than buying a whole new mount.
I'm on my third genuine Garmin mount for my Garmin Nuvi 250 now, having owned the device itself since 2007 - still making use of my 'Lifetime' map updates for it so it makes sense to keep it going - it still works well. I can't say the same for the mounts, though.
The first mount lasted quite a few years but Garmin have changed the design recently and it's been a step back - the new ones are initially really powerful but after just a short period in use something seems to change - the spring behind the cup seems to stretch and it never holds well after that. Mount #2 (the later design) lasted about 8 months in occasional use, and mount #3 (also the later design) has barely lasted a month. Not very happy. I'm going to have to consider a third-party mount with a simple splat-on sucker arrangement - very little to go wrong with one of those.
