An excellent collection of Bing Crosby's films. I found the picture quality good even on the three discs with two films namely The Emperor Waltz & A Connecticut Yankee; Rhythm on the River & Rhythm Range and Birth of the Blues & Blue Skies. These discs however lack any other programmes or background clips as are added to most DVDs.
Holiday Inn, The Bells of St. Marys and Going My Way are all on separate discs. This means that there are only 6 discs in the set, not nine as in the specification

TOP 100 REVIEWERon 17 September 2014
The Bing Crosby Collection (Amazon purchase) consists of 6 DVDs containing 9 films. They are as follows:

1) Rhythm on the River: A Paramount movie casting Bing as a ghost composer for a singer on the way out (Basil Rathbone). Mary Martin is enlisted as his lyricist. After an uneasy relationship, the inevitable happens. Rathbone's cynical assistant (Oscar Levant) is glorious. Songs include 'Rhythm on The River' and 'Only Forever'. One of Bing's better films.

2) Rhythm On the Range: A Western. Bing meets his vocal match with the loud Martha Raye, playing a cowboy's sister. 'Mr Paganini' launched her career. A low-budget film with plenty of songs. 'Empty Saddles', 'I'm an Old Cowhand', (a big hit for Bing), and 'Rhythm of the Range'.

3) Birth of the Blues: A tribute to the New Orleans Jazz scene sees Bing as a clarinettist who sets up a band in Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Brian Donlevy is bailed fro jail to complete the outfit. Numbers include, 'Wait Till the Sun Shines Nellie', and the W.C. Handy classic, 'St Louis Blues'. Bing Crosby loved it as we all do.

4) Blue Skies: Paramount's budget of $3 million dollars reunited Crosby with Astaire (first seen together in 'Holiday Inn'). A huge success with a score by Irving Berlin. seeing the leads in a song-and-dance team falling for the same girl. 30 hits include 'Puttin on the Ritz', 'A Pretty Girl is just like a Melody', 'An Old-Fashioned Girl', ' Blue Skies' and 'How Deep Is the Ocean'. A wonderful musical spectacle that defies repeat viewing.

5) The Emperor Waltz: A charming fantasy. Bing Crosby is a gramophone salesman who tries to sell to the Emperor through his niece (Tyrolean background). An excellent film with numbers including, 'Get Yourself a Phonograph', 'Friendly Mountains' and Strauss's ' The Emperor Waltz', all sung by Bing.

6)A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court: Bing Crosby stars as a blacksmith in Mark twain's adventure. After being knocked out ,Bing finds himself in the past. Filmed in Technicolor, his co-star was the wonderful red-headed Rhonda Fleming. William Bendix and Sir Cedric Hardwicke were amongst the cast. Songs included, 'Once and for Always' and 'Busy Doing Nothing'. A film full of charm.

7)Holiday Inn: A Huge, bumper success of a film pairing Crosby and Astaire as a song-and-dance team. They split up when Crosby opens up a Holiday Inn venue working on public holidays. Romantic subplots with Marjorie Reynolds and Virginia Dale add to the magic of the film and the Irving Berlin score. 'White Christmas', 'Happy Holiday', 'Holiday Inn', 'Let's Say It With Firecrackers'. Seasonal and sentimental Yuletide magic that spawned a fleet of hotels plus the 'White Christmas' film sequel.

8)Going My Way: A heart-warming hit for the crooner playing a young Catholic priest sent to take over the parish of Father Fitzgibbon (Barry Fitzgerald). Their relationship led to a top-rate film. Numbers include, 'Swingin' On a Star' and 'Going My Way'. A tremendously successful and attractive film.

9)The Bells Of St Mary's: A massive success pairing Crosby with Ingrid Bergman. Crosby plays the Father O'Malley role from 'Going My Way'. The couple exude charm as they work on a saviour mission. Not so much song as magnetism. Oscar nominations for both leads.

Words are insufficient to describe Bing Crosby's contribution to entertainment, whether on film or on vinyl. A multi-talented individual he certainly was. This collection of his films are a fitting tribute to his talent. The sound and visuals are first-class. Bing Crosby is part of our heritage and this is a welcome addition to his material output. Highly recommended for all ages.

A gift for my brother-in-law. He wanted just two of the films in this collection but by buying them separately the cost would have been just 45p less than the entire collection. Made sense to buy the entire collection.
