What the CD back-cover image above isn't clear enough to show you, and what doesn't appear anywhere else on Amazon's information, is that the subtitle of this recording is "Original mono recordings 1942-1951". But unfortunately the "Pictures at an Exhibition" on this disc is NOT the famous 1951 Carnegie Hall live recording that I was after. Instead it's a 1947 studio recording. Even taking that disappointment into account, however, the noise reduction software has been applied so heavy-handedly to this transfer that at times the piano sound wobbles and morphs into something barely identifiable as a piano at all. Quieter answering phrases seem to emanate from a second instrument somewhere down the hall.
I'm off in search of 1951.
