Kurt Masur is a first class interpreter of Mendelssohn's music and this set, recorded with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, is among the very best in the catalogue. The performances of the five 'numbered' symphonies are all delightful - swift, light-footed, and beautifully phrased. The complete 'Midsummer Night's Dream' music is a real winner -just listen to the strings in the 'fairy' music of the Overture and you will be hooked. The Piano Concertos with Katsaris are just as enjoyable and the recording quality leaves nothing to be desired.
This is, of course, not a comprehensive collection of Masur's Leipzig Mendelssohn recordings. Missing are the Violin Concerto with Vengerov, the early string symphonies, and a disc of overtures - all of which are well worth searching out.
The Leipzig orchestra play superbly for Kurt Masur and this set is an essential purchase for all lovers of music of the romantic period.
