Charlie Musselwhite is supposed to have said, that he only knows one song, he just plays it slower or faster or in a different key. Well if that's the case he disguises it well and has managed to release over twenty albums of this song. This latest release is right up there with the best of them. This is no nonsense, no frills earthy blues, from the driving Church is Out and Blues for Yesterday, to the dark sounding Black Water. Buy this CD and just listen to that harp cry! It's a great driving album, but the problem is, there are only ten songs most of them two or three minutes long, so its finished before I get home. Ok just stick it on again!!!

I love this CD. I had never heard of Charlie until they played a Christmas song of his on BBC Radio 2. I just love the Blues.

This is a straight ahead blues album. Throughout his career Musselwhite has trespassed into adjacent musical fields -`Christo Redentor' was on his first record back in the 60's, not your typical blues cut. Some of his strongest releases have born witness to his refusal to become hidebound. But blues is the muse and on `Delta Hardware' Charlie, with the backing of a sizzling band, shakes the shack with great blasts from his Mississippi saxophone. He yells and snarls and struts with the energy of a man half his age and the harmonica playing is masterful throughout. The harp is a simple and emotive instrument. There are those who have learned to play with it with dazzling speed and dexterity. Charlie blows with heart and soul and eschews to use ten notes where the right one will do perfectly. I'd venture he's never played better. Homage is paid to `Little Walter' Jacobs with the inclusion of a couple of his numbers but the band kicks up enough dirt that they don't end up sounding over reverent re-treads. If you like blues there's a fair chance you will like this - particularly played loud. If you are a fan of Musselwhite already you will probably have this and, like me, you may rate it among his top two or three.
