This movie was first released in 1958(1986)2006, in super widescreen 2.35.1, deluxe colour and runs 96 minutes. The sound and picture quality are very good. The film starts in 1800's, when Mr Butler, boss of trail herd of cattle and horses is taking his animals from Oragon to Fort Rocks. He introduces Lat Evans(DON MURRAY) to his men. Lat wants to make as much money as possible to have his own ranch. Tom Payne(STUART WHITMAN) joins him as they come across Yehu(RICHARD EGAN), who wants to race his own horse with that of Lat. Lat wins. Later in the saloon Callie(LEE REMICK) is intorduced to Tom and Lat and Lat follows Callie to her place. Lat was going with Tom for hunting wolves and their hides. However, after snow comes in Tom quits, but comes back as Indians attack Lat and shoot him. Tom takes Lat to Fort Rock to get his bullet out. Lat recovers at Callie's place. Now having lost his hides, Lat tries to get a bank loan, but has no collateral. Callie offers $2,000/- and bank aggrees to match what ever Lat pays for his land. Fences go up and cattle come in. Lat triples his cattle numbers and Conrades invite Lat for dinner. There Lat meets Conrade's(Bank Manager) niece, Joyce Conrade(PATRICIA OWENS). Callie is upset, when Lat marries Joyce and become parents. Farmers were loosing horses and Lat aggrees to go along with them to see who is stealing the horses.
How will it end? Who is stealing the horses? What is Yehu upto? What will happen to Callie? Will law and order break down? What about Lat's future, who is trying to be the next Senator? What will happen to Tom?
This is not an action western, but is full of drama with excellent performances. The story of A B GUTHRIE Jr is beautifully photographed by CHARLES G CLARKE and briskly directed by RICHARD FLEISCHER.

This review is from: These Thousand Hills [DVD] [1959] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
"These Thousand Hills" is a mature western about the corrupting effects of single-minded ambition. Don Murray is excellent as the apparently ingenuous cowboy who believes that all life's problems are solved by having money and finds that in fact that that causes more problems than he's capable of handling. First-class support especially from Lee Remick as the "bad girl" who starts him on his way, Richard Egan as the smiling villain, and Stuart Whitman as Murray's one-time friend who knows he's heading for disaster. Events more than action but the climax is all one could hope for.
