Fhis is a well thought out product. It covers the very early days of George Shearing in a comprehensive but not exhaustive manner. The sound quality is excellent and there are good informative notes. There is a discography for each track showing the personnel, date and location of the recording with a identification of the source record. This show that Shearing's work foir the minor labels such as Savoy and Discovery have been used as well as the better-known quintet sides for MGM. This CD can be recommended for anyone wanting a representative of Shearing's work in the 1947-1952 period.

For me George Shearing personifies the post WWII period of Great British Jazz as the stand out pianist of his time. In this collection George make every note of every tune link together to deliver another gem from his repertoire.
Having lived my student years in London from '50 to '52 I was privileged to witness the surge of interest on the jazz scene both traditional and modern, especially bebop. George Shearing's live performances were relatively few compared to some of my other idols such as Tubby Hayes and Victor Feldman but his influence was huge. His decision to go to the USA was logical and has proved right but I just wish that he had found time for a few more public performances for us before crossing the pond.
Magnificent album of some of his masterpieces.

I am pleased with the CD as I am interested in his early recordings - even his (sad) recent death failed to galvanise the BBC (who have probably the largest record library in the world !) into playing some of his earlier work. A good, relaxing album.

Beautifully remastered, these are gems, and in this compilation CD they sound even better than ever. Just to put a cherry on this lovely sundae, it's from bargain priced Naxos Jazz Legend series. I'm just so pleased to have and hear these examples of a very great pianist from his early prime.
