A great piece of kit,

I just bought one of these as a gift, but decided to keep it myself! Having used a dedicated Yupiteru airband scanner (VT-225) since 1992, looking for a replacement has been difficult. There are very few specialist airband scanners available nowadays, as most scanners seem to cover just about every frequency under the sun and have millions of features that will never get used. This is great if that's what you are looking for, but I was looking for a radio that excels at one task: airband coverage. That's where this little Uniden comes in. It's perfect for the job. On paper the specification is as good - if not slightly better - than my Yupiteru, which was recognized as the best dedicated airband scanner you could buy. This little radio has all the features you need in a very compact unit. It's all digital so slightly fiddly at first working out the volume, squelch and storing actions, but once you have the hang of it it's a doddle. I put a slightly better antenna on (it's a BNC connector which is another plus) and the reception performance has been brilliant. Don't be fooled by the price: if you think by paying more you are getting a "better" scanner, this is often not the case. You are paying for more features and more frequency coverage, which means that the more expensive units are actually worse at airband performance than this set. Just compare the specifications. If you are looking for a proper airband set that has great sensitivity then look no further than this brilliant unit. It is brilliant value for money. Well done Uniden!

Neat little job,

Bought this as a back up to a general use scanner. I wanted an airband-dedicated receiver and this fitted the bill. Tried using different aerials as recommended in other reviews, but found no improvement. Only drawback is that if you use it to scan lots of channels, the batteries die within 5 hours, these being high-capacity rechargables. Have used it to monitor just one channel thouh for a couple of days and batteries still in green sector on my tester. Receiver pulls in quite a few signals, audio quality good to with 400 mw speaker.

At the Amazon price it's very good value, but benefits from an improved antenna (an added extra) Overall wellworth it as a 'starter unit'.

Just taken delivery of this little scanner. Size is the only thing little about this piece of kit, it's big on spec and performance and at an unbelievable price. Kevin's earlier review suggests reception problems, I live 50 miles from my nearest civil airport at Leeds and can pick up reception using the provided antenna without problems. Got to be one of the best scanners on the market and an affordable price. Instruction manual could be clearer but once you get used to the working of the button it's a doddle. Highly recommended.

I bought the product to take to an airshow to listen to the air traffic control rather than the usual PA system. The receiver worked great and was very easy to use to search for and programme the required frequencies. Its worth noting that size of the radio is very small, it comes with a belt clip but would easily fit inside a pocket (much smaller than other airband receivers i had previously seen/used) which makes it ideal for carrying around.

I placed my order on Friday night and it arrived the following MONDAY MORNING amazing service well done NEVADA - via Amazon. First off the radio is only about the size of a small mobile phone, takes only three AA batteries and can be easily fitted into a normal sized coat pocket. Straight out of the box I put in three rechargeable AA batteries quickly read through the basics in the handbook and off I went. Within seconds I was listening to aircraft landing at two airfields over thirty miles away using the small aerial that comes with the radio - excellent! Then to my GREAT surprise it picked up two radio ham stations one in of all places WYOMING in the USA - yes WYOMING! and then a chap broadcasting as clear as day from BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA!! EVEN more amazing! I must admit that we live right on the Essex coast and on a hill but for a radio so small to bring in stations from such a distance is quite amazing, definitely FIVE STARS all round. If you are just looking for a VERY good scanning radio at a very good price then look no further than the BEARCAT UBC30XLT from Nevada - via Amazon.

Even on my local airfield and in surrounding areas, reception has not been good.Very disappointing - maybe investment in aerials, home and car, could be the answer. |
