5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, 2 Mar 2006

After years of waiting, this brilliant movie has been released on DVD at last! Based on the novel 'Washington Square' by Henry James, this is the story of a young woman who discovers that she is far stronger that she, or anyone else ever imagined possible. The transformation in Olivia de Havilland's character is absolutely stunning - it is impossible not to be moved by Catherine's predicament, even as (later on) she terrifies you.
De Havilland deserved that Oscar for best actress. It's an incredible performance. Ralph Richardson, as Catherine's intelligent, cruel father, is also amazing.
This is a Hollywood film which defies all expectations, and exceeds them. I just can't praise it highly enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars A late forties classic, 18 April 2006

"The Heiress" is an adaptation of a play based on Henry James' "Washington Square", with Olivia de Havilland in the title role, Montgomery Clift as her suitor and Ralph Richardson and Miriam Hopkins as her father and aunt. The story is very simple. Plain and dull Catherine Sloper is courted by a penniless but charming Morris Townsend. While her aunt is delighted and finds him wonderful, her father suspects him to be a mercenary and threatens to cut her off her will.

Directed by William Wyler in 1949 it went on to win four Oscars including one for de Havilland. Her performance is a strong one, especially in the third act of the film, but I must confess that I her higher than usual voice in the beginning did get a bit on my nerves - someone though that this would be a great idea to show her innocence. But best of the cast is surely Miriam Hopkins who manages to steal the show as Aunt Lavinia. It is a very good film which I can't help but recommend.

As for the DVD is an extras-free release showing the film in a acceptable copy, but one that shows the film's age and full of little scratches. This is a pity but as there are no alternatives at the moment and the price is a fair one, I think it's a must have classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Olivia Finishes her Embroidery, 20 Jun 2011
This review is from: The Heiress [DVD] (DVD)
Absolutely flawless and a revelation of subtle style. Performances first class. The story faithfully transposed with witty script and convincing performances as daughter gets her own back on father by turning into him. Has some excellent camera work. And quite frightening occasionally - the mirrors, the windows, the staircases. You can't stop watching it really - it doesn't cop-out! No doubt Freudian and despite the infantilised, 'self-harming' woman, grown-up cinema.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Henry James novel successfully adapted., 15 Jun 2011

It must be difficult to make a film adaptation of a novel that deals with unresolvable frustrations experienced by a small group of characters. Dr Sloper (Sir Ralph Richardson) is a widower, disappointed that his only child is far inferior to his dead wife. Catherine, his daughter (Olivia de Havilland), fails undeservedly to win her father's admiration. Morris Townsend (Montgomery Clift) offers Catherine the chance to marry, but his motives and reliability are problematic.

The setting in the Henry James novel, moreover, rarely changes, posing another cinematic difficulty. We are in Washington Square, New York. We sometimes look down a huge sweeping staircase within the house, we occasionally see the square outside, and we almost always hear the sound of horse-drawn carriages passing by. Frequently we get a close up of the tapestry Catherine is stitching.

Director William Wyler allows the drama to play out for 115 minutes. A measure of the film's success is the awards it won. It won four Oscars (including Olivia de Havilland for best leading female actor, and Aaron Copland for the music) and received an additional three nominations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow - but satisfying., 10 Mar 2010

Movie based on a story by Henry James.

A plain unloved young woman lives with her wealthy father. Motherless and starved of affection by all around her; she clings to the desperate hope of love from a young man who showers her with attention.

Unlike many stories/films, though satisfying; this does not have a happy outcome, and therefore pretty unusual. One is left feeling 'can the world be so cruel'?

This movie can seem a little over-long and slow in getting started, but stick with it - you'll be glad you did!

Stars a very handsome Ralph Richardson, Miriam Hopkins and Olivia de Havilland.

5.0 out of 5 stars An intrigueing voyage into the effects of parental neglect, 31 Dec 2012

If you are considering having children or already have them, do take the time to view this film. It reveals how important it is to love and value your children for the person they are and not judge them because they do not live up to your standard of beauty, tallent etc. Love is the most important legacy parents can bestow on each child, money is worthless without it, the storyline seems to indicate. If not, they will learn to hate with a passion, as the mild, sweet character(played by Olivia de Havilland) turned monster, when her controlling father showed how little he loved or valued her happiness. She was indeed heiress of his inpenetrable hatred, rather than his vast wealth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Melodrama, 2 Dec 2007

William Wyler's direction, and great acting from the cast, especially Olivia De Haviland make this a memorable and satisfying picture.

Olivia plays Catherine, a young lady who is the victim of poisonous parenting. Her father blames her for her mother's death in childbirth. She has no confidence, and few social skills. She falls head over heals foe a siutor played by Montgomery Clift, but can not see that he is interested in her fortune. Enough of the plot, but Catherine gets hurt and wreaks her revenge, in doing so she toughens up and grows up.

This to me in 1949 is getting near the end of quality melodramas like this being made and making money. Television was mushrooming, and cinema audiences falling. The 50s demanded glamour and colour and fresh new faces.

A grand film from the end of the golden age of melodrama.
