5.0 out of 5 stars Music for the piece of mind, 21 Dec. 2011
This review is from: Baby (Audio CD)
An absolutely amazing minor masterpiece from the beginning of the 70s - really a MUST!
In fact, this is a demo, which was recorded in 1970 (or so)for Jack Holzman's Elektra (at least these were the rumours), but never released. Only 100 copies of vinyl had been pressed* with plain sleeve reproduced on pirate CD by Radioactive (which is still welcome, because otherwise the music would be lost).
Sidetrack was short-lived NY outfit (nothing is known regretfully): Alan Brown, Christopher Brown, Peter Brown, Kenneth Gullmartin, Andrew Higgs, John Lewis with Tracy Brown acting as assistant producer.
"Baby" - the only existing album (what a pity!) shows exceptional band in peak form. Sidetrack definitely was Beatles-inspired, because most of the material is predictable mainstream pop with the flavour of psychedelia, and some shy ventures into experimenting, but it has a real gem of prog/baroque rock - "Blues for Matthew", which can easily stand next to the best compositions of Procol Harum or King Crimson - plus few more interesting, but not so distinguished tracks (Piece of Mind, Summership...). Personally I would have bought it just because of "Blues for Matthew".
The vocals are pleasant, confident, a bit too sweet; music is built around distinctive keyboards sound accentuated by bass - without roaring guitar solos. A very decent and calm album.
* If the LP price is just a raving madness, the CD is more than affordable
