If ever a band epitomised being in the wrong place at the wrong time then this is the band!Issuing Prog/metal at a time when Kiss/Aerosmith and BOC were riding high and latterly pop rock when the USA wasnt quite ready was the bands downfall, but dont let that put you off, contained in this 2 disc set are two of the best cd's you never heard.

ANGEL (1975) Opening with possibly their best ever track, the 'Tower' the bands influences are clear the big four from Britain,Zep/Purple/Sabbath and Heep are all to be found in the likes of the aforementioned 'Tower' alongside 'Rock N Rollers,Mariner and Long Time'. 5 stars all the way

HELLUVA BAND(1976) Often overlooked and unfairly compared as the weaker of the two, this is actually another excellent disc, certainly Punky Meadows Lead guitar is more to the fore in this album,as highlighted by 'Dr Ice'.however keyboard maestro Guiffria gets his moment 'on The Fortune' - a fantastic mid 70's piece of prog, had ELP recorded this Giuffria would be lauded as a master.Although the debut slightly shades it, this is still a great album and worthy of your time.

A previous reviewer stated he never listened again after this disc, his loss,Angel are always worth a listen.Special thanks to Bgo for a superb release.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost Famous.., 4 Sept. 2006
This review is from: ANGEL / ANGEL, HELLUVA BAND (Audio CD)
The first Angel album is a pure classic, this compilation is worth the price of admission for the track "Tower" alone..

But beware, Helluva Band is awful.. I have no idea what went wrong, the sound is thin, the song writing bland, imagine my disapointment when after living with the first album from the week of release I eventually got hold of the 2nd LP a year later only to find the band had suffered the musical equivalent of a stroke.

I've not heard any of their subsequent releases thanks to that let down.

But back to the first album, this thing ROCKS.. it's the logical extension of the Uriah Heep, Deep Purple thing, loads of melotron, great riffs, solid backing, soaring vocals, 80% of it holds up no problem in 2006.

Angel were always painted as a gimmick band, thanks to the image and hype, but really at the heart of it all was a great band, if you love "Stargazer" by Ritchie Blackmores Rainbow or songs that powerful and grandious just push the "One Click" purchase now, you'll be happy..

This repackaging of the first two Angel releases is great value for money. Were they the greatest band to ever grace the planet? Well at times yes. The first album is stunning. 'Tower' is a classic and the stand out track but there are gems on this debut throughout. The keyboards stand out on this album and various types from organ to synth to harpsichord are employed giving the album that Rainbow 'Rising' feel. 'Helluva Band' is a great title but the record doesn't come close to the first. It is hard to believe that the same guys, Derek Lawrence and 'Big' Jim Sullivan, produced both albums. There are some cracking tracks on it like 'The Fortune' and 'Feelin' Right' but it does plod a little and has a very muddy sound. It is the best Angel album with regards to Punky Meadows and there is plenty (too much maybe) of good quality 70's guitar noodling. If you've never heard the band and you like 70's hard rock they are well worth a listen.
