I suppose you could call The Willies an anthology film, but that doesn't really sit comfortably with me as there's only really two stories, an anthology film in my eyes would have at least three tales. The film opens with a teenage lad and his two cousins camping out in the garden, they decide to start telling each other some gross stories. All three tell a very quick tale, one about a fried rat in a bucket of chicken, an old man on a haunted house ride and one with a poodle in a microwave. It's after these that our two proper stories begin. Tale one is about a young boy at school that is constantly bullied, a friendly janitor and a monster that eats children in the school bathroom. Tale two is about a very disturbed young boy who has an unhealthy interest in flies. The film ends with a nice reveal with the boys back in the tent.

It's difficult to judge the acting in The Willies as this is a horror film that's aimed towards children, and some of the actors purposefully give over the top performances. Most memorable are James Karen, Sean Astin and Michael Bower. Karen is excellent as always, he plays the Janitor Mr. Jenkins. Karen is probably best known to horror fans for playing Mr. Teague in Poltergeist, Frank in Return Of The Living Dead and Ed in the sequel. Astin plays one of the kids in the tent telling stories, he shot to stardom at an early age when he played Mikey in The Goonies. He went on to star in some of my favourite film when I was a kid, Toy Soldiers and California Man. He is of course now best known for playing Samwise Gamgee in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Bower plays Gordy Belcher in the second tale, he likes to pick the wings off flies. He does a great job in bringing to life one of the most repugnant characters from any film ever, I challenge anyone to watch this film and not feel repulsed, disgusted and angered by Gordy Belcher, he's one of the most vile characters i've ever come across. There's a scene where he pulls a prank on a girl from his school, the look of sadistic joy on his face made me want to slap him silly. Clu Gulager has a very small role as a school Principal.

The Willies was written and directed by Brian Peck, it's still his one and only credit as a writer or director. Peck tends to work mostly as an actor, he was also in Return Of The Living Dead where he played Scuz. I assume James Karen and Clu Gulager did the film as a favour to him, as the story with them both in was shot not long after Return Of The Living Dead. I would have liked to see what Peck could've done with a bit of money, as it's obvious The Willies was shot on a very low budget. The special effects are crude and cheap to look at, the lighting in some scenes is pretty bad and it would have been nice to shorten the second tale and add a third. Obviously there's no nudity as it's aimed towards a younger audience, but there is some occasional foul language and even a little gore.

The Willies has never been available on dvd in the UK as far as I know, I can assure anybody that's interested, the region 1 US dvd plays perfectly on region 2 players. The picture quality isn't great, there's very little print damage, it's just very soft with very little fine detail. It's more than watchable. There's no extras and no subtitles, it's a very cheap release of a very cheap film. The Willies is like two episodes of Goosebumps or Are You Afraid Of The Dark? that have been put together and they decided to have some kids in a tent start the stories. The Willies isn't a great film, but I really did enjoy it. I'd never recommend it over something like Creepshow or Tales From The Darkside, but it's a lot of fun if you can ignore how juvenile parts of it is and the low budget.

THIS IS AN ENTERTAINING LITTLE HORROR MOVIE WHICH I PERSONALLY HAD NEVER SEEN-ITS DEFINITELY QUITE DIFFERENT IN CONCEPT TO ALL THE OTHER HORROR MOVIES OUT THERE AT PRESENT NO SLASHER TEENAGERS IN THE WOODS OR ZOMBIE APOCALYPTIC CREATIONS.WE HAVE 3 YOUNGSTERS ON A CAMPING TRIP TELLING EACH OTHER FRIGHTENING STORIES IN THEIR TENT.ONE INVOLVES A YOUNGSTER AT SCHOOL BEING BULLIED BY SOME OTHER KIDS WHO COME TO A STICKY END WHEN IT TURNS OUT THAT THE CARETAKER IS A MONSTER WHO ROAMS FROM TOWN TO TOWN TAKING JOBS IN DIFFERENT SCHOOLS AND NEVER STAYING AROUND FOR VERY LONG.THE SEQUENCE WITH THE MONSTER IN THE BOYS TOILETS IS VERY FUNNY ESPECIALLY WHEN THE TYRANT SCHOOL MISTRESS COMES TOO A STICKY END AS WELL.THE SECOND STORY CONCERNS A LITTLE OBESE LAD WHO COLLECTS DEAD FLIES AS A HOBBY AND IS OUTCAST BY HIS DAD FOR DOING SO.THEN YOU HAVE THE RECLUSE FARMER WHO HAS BEEN WORKING ON A NEW TYPE OF FERTILISER WHICH CAUSES VEGETABLES TO INCREASE TO GINORMOUS SIZE-AND YOU CAN GUESS WHAT HAPPENS TO THE FLIES WHEN THEY GET SUBJECTED TO THE SAME.THIS STORY IS NOT AS GOOD AS THE FIRST ONE BUT ITS STILL A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT TO THE NORMAL GIANT INSECT IDEA FOR EXAMPLE IN FOOD OF THE GODS.I FOUND IT ALL QUITE ENJOYABLE BUT ITS A SHAME ABOUT THE PRINT TRANSFER WHICH FOR A REGION 1 DISC IS QUITE MURKY BUT THEN I SUSPECT IT WAS PROBABLY A LOW BUDGET MOVIE.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Awesome Little Horror Movie, 18 May 2004
This review is from: Willies [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Seriously one of the most entertaining horrors you could watch. It comprises of three tales of horror. But all you need to watch is the awesomely gory tale set in the school, where a this little kid is being bullied by other bigger kids at his school, and he befriends the school janitor who turns out to be an evil monster that eats children. Anyway you gotta watch it to appreciate it, its not a major blockbuster or anything but it is a really funny, gory and damn entertaining movie to watch. Imagine what tales from the crypt might have been like if it was any good and you've got the willies. Geniuinely Recommended.
