5.0 out of 5 stars Transient Life In Twilight, 10 July 2007

This review is from: O True Believers (Audio CD)
Wonderful small melodies and variations played with the gentlest touch you could ever imagine. As the previous reviewer wrote, Blackshaw's music sounds like "the sound of hope", just listen to the first track, "transient life in twilight", and immerse yourself into this light, airy, ecstatic and lively joy, like rediscovering that firts spark of hope, like letting yourself being willingly mesmerised by the beauty in life. I experience a similar joy listening to Maurice Deebank's jingle-jangly lines or atmospherics on early Felt records, but here there's no constriction in any song-structure and the folk background is prevailing. Heart opening.

4.0 out of 5 stars the sound of hope, 1 July 2007
This review is from: O True Believers (Audio CD)
Okay, first things first: I really don't know enough about guitars or this style of music to discuss the level of technical proficiency on display here!

That out of the way, the next thing to say is that to my untrained ear, this is absolutely beautiful.

James Blackshaw deals in a rather mesmerising style of 12 string finger picking, which shimmers and ripples like raindrops upon cymbals, and is sincere and utterly unpretentious (unlike my corny simile back there!)

There is a certain spiritual feel to this CD, whether it's the fragility of tone and the completely absorbing nature of the music; or the connotations which reach my western ears through the exotic eastern raga style of playing is up for debate. The bottom line is, if you enjoy instrumental guitar led music played by a true artist; buy this.
