5.0 out of 5 stars A hilarious farce!
Richard (Jonathan Silverman) and Larry (Andrew McCarthy) are two working stiffs trying to get ahead in corporate world. While working overtime, they find evidence that someone has been defrauding the company, and they take their evidence to their boss Bernie Lomax (Terry Kaiser). Bernie is so impressed with them that he invites them to his weekend house on the coast. Yep,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Mildly amusing farce
When two geeky office workers (Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman) discover an embezzlement swindle at their company, they go to tell the boss and are rewarded with an invite to a weekend at the eponymous Bernie's beach house. But unbeknownst to them, the bosses are the embezzlers. Upon arrival they find him dead but put up a charade that he is still alive, as the...

5.0 out of 5 stars A hilarious farce!, 6 Sep 2005

Kurt A. Johnson (Marseilles, IL USA) - See all my reviews
Yep, things are looking up for our heroes...or are they? It turns out that Bernie is the thief, and he arranges to have them killed! When the boys arrive at Bernie's they find him dead, and soon find out about his plans for them. Fortunately, none of Bernie's party-hardy friends seem to realize that he is dead. If the boys can keep up the pretext that Bernie is alive, they just might survive. Now, how do you keep anyone from finding out that your boss is actually dead? [Color, released in 1989, with a running time of 1:37.]

OK, no matter who writes the description, this movie is going to sound implausible to the point of silliness. Well...yeah, this is not a movie to be taken seriously. What it is is a hilarious farce, with Terry Kaiser doing a surprisingly funny imitation of a dead guy! The movie is generally clean with one off camera sex scene and one scene with a practically naked woman (Tawny - Elois DeJoria, Playboy Miss April 1988). But, that said, it's a very funny movie that you can watch with your whole family. We love this movie and highly recommend it to you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than I remembered!, 8 Feb 2011
This review is from: Weekend At Bernies [1989] [DVD] (DVD)
I saw this as a child and thought it was really funny. Fast forward 15 years and I decided to buy it for old time's sake, just to see if it was actually any good... and it was even funnier than I'd remembered! Besides the obvious massive joke (ie: Bernie, the partying corpse), there were some subtle little jokes that I'd never have noticed as a 10 year old which made me chuckle. I can't believe it's rated 15, though I suppose violence, murder and hints at necrophilia will tend to push a rating up!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Silver Screen's Finest Hour, 17 Sep 2008
This review is from: Weekend At Bernies [1989] [DVD] (DVD)
"Weekend At Bernie's" is, quite simply, the greatest film of all time. The central gag is so outstandingly good, so exceptionally funny, that the entire thing is swept along on a tide of comedic euphoria never before seen on celluloid. Once Bernie makes the cinematically painless transition from embezzling insurance executive to "corpse of mayhem", the laughs go down like so many sweet banana daiquiris. One never tires of seeing Bernie speeding in his golf cart, Bernie running for the ferry, Bernie chilling on a moonlit beach, Bernie water-skiing, Bernie sprinting home to collect some forgotten speedboat keys - all in the stimulating company of those quintessential `80s go-getters Larry and Richard. Not one to be hindered by such a trivial matter as his own death, Bernie's posthumous achievements include: hosting one of the finest house parties of the year, closing an astute car deal, placating an infuriated girlfriend, and engaging his own killer in a complex game of cat and mouse, leading ultimately to the culprit's arrest and descent into madness.
WAB also constitutes the only successful revival of the classic physical comedy of the Chaplin-era. All in all a wonderful phantasmagoria of hilarity that single-handedly raises the medium of film to high art.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple Slapstick proves a winner yet again, 26 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Ok so theres no big stars in this movie, no explosions and no violence...But this film still stands up against all the moden day comedies thrust upon us. The plot centres around 2 hapless losers who whose boss gets killed, there job is to cover it up. Lots of simple humour, an easy to follow plot and lots of sight gags without the gross out humour. A real pre run to the Farrelly brothers movies and it seems a shame that after such a great performance Andrew McCarthy's career went down the pan. For an entertaining release from the stress of the real world be sure to check this out. Just don't take it to serious.

I recommend this product to all persons, young or old, because the actor who plays Bernie is sublime. He acts like a really dead corps and his expression is very funny.
