As a usually emotionally constipated UK resident, film viewer, I should sneer at the marshmallow sentiments, home spun morality, and all round apple pie consistency of this Capra'esque story ....... but I love it!

Michael J Fox is just so likeable, that it is difficult not to root for him, and Julie Warner is not just a simpering local girl who is destined to end up with an essentially decent but uninspiring local guy. The early scenes remind me of Northern Exposure (buy this it's great!) and the odd ball characters all have a back story. However, essentially it is a boy meets girl, boy and girl are attracted, boy leaves girl, and then comes back. It's no Annie Hall, but hey we all need comfort films now and again!

Every now and then a little gem of a movie slips through quietly, unnoticed by the masses.
This is one such film. Yes it has a simple plot, but it is an excellent script and thoroughly watchable.
I totally recommend this film to anyone who enjoys romantic comedies.

There's a very moral story in this film. It pulls on a few heart strings and lets you see a certain side of society. Look through the money making body sculpture world of medicine and read the basic moral undertone applicable to all walks of life. On the whole, an enjoyable, believable storyline. For the price, you should buy this DVD.

Michael J Fox has always been a likeable actor and I have seen many of his films. This one is perhaps less well known than Secret Of My Success, Back To The Future (Trilogy) or Teen Wolf but it is no less entertaining and enjoyable. As Ben Stone, a wannabe plastic surgeon in Hollywood, he is on a road trip to his goal when an accident finds him in front of a judge in a small Southern town and sentenced to doing time as the local Doctor. His beloved car in for repair he is left with little choice and as the movie unfolds it is a typical, but enchanting, story of the way a small town can become just as alluring as the big city. Of course there is a pretty girl to help entrap him but the plot and script keeps the relationship from being too syrupy sweet.

Fox is great in his role and his boyish charm is so evident. Julie Warner is a lovely foil for him as Tallulah "Lou" and their budding love is an easy on the eyes and ears affair.

A nice easy rom com and worthy of watching.

This is a cute movie and holds your attention. Speaking about attention, I'm not saying that Julie Warner is like Hedy Lamarr; but they both where the same suit when they come out of the water (birthday.) And George Hamilton plays a similar character as he does in 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag (1997) . I am glad it is not one of those letterbox (have to look at the black lines) pictures. They are ok but distracting when not necessary.
Dr. Benjamin Stone is on his way to try out for a new job as a plastic surgeon. Due to impedance in the road, he is forced to detour through a local fence. The local judge compels him to pay with community service and the story snowballs from there. This is a cute movie with many twists and turns.

I love this film. It's just a nice, sweet, simple film. I've watched it so many times and finally purchased a region 2 PAL version vs Region 1 NTSC, so it is a much smoother picture. One of the few films where I genuinely lose track of time, day dreaming watching it :-)

The movie has Michael J Fox so really what more needs to be said except to say that it is nice to see a movie showing the virtues of small town America and not the big city.

Not the film you understand - I like it very much as you will see later... No, the fact that I cannot buy it here for my region 2 DVD player. PLEASE someone bring this little gem out for the UK.
Still asides from my little plea - the film. Right, this film is a pure piece of American schmaltz, it has a small town, a man who changes his way because of the good hearted folk around and if you look up Capraesque in the dictionary the chances are that it would say "...see Doc Hollywood". I love it.
As a piece of pure sunday afternoon entertainment it has the lot. Winning performances from an assured cast, a witty script and a warm cuddly plot.
Michael J Fox brings a natural charm to his role as the young Doctor who is forced to spend time in the small southern town of Grady (home of the Grady Squash) after knocking down the judges newly built fence. He is sentenced to community service under the eye of the irrascible Dr Hogue (played with relish by Barnard Hughes)and unexpectedly falls in love - with a woman (Lou the ambulence driver) and gradually the town.
The cast is filled out with some lovely turns from David Ogden Stiers, Woody Harrelson and Bridget Fonda and a hilarious knowing cameo from George Hamilton. For me the real stars are the locals - the man who is so pleased with the Doc he brings him a pig, the couple who see the Doc so he can read their letters, and a cack-handed fisherman are just a few of the small delights this film offers.
It does tend to stereotype a bit - but this is a fantasy after all - not for this film any truck with the type of southern bigotry we are more used to seeing portrayed.
There are few laugh out loud moments, but then they are not required as this is not just a comedy film - no - this is the movie equivalent of a big warm hug.

For all those who were teenagers in the 80s and big MJF fans, this is a must have. A lovely story, with lots of humour.
