3.0 out of 5 stars B Movie looking a very dated
I bought this film as I had good memories of it from the 80's when I first saw it, Season Hubley does an excellent job of trying to add heart to what is a character much flawed but trying to make the best of her situation for her child.

It's not aged well and seems very cliched but it's worth it just for her performance.

When a pimp snuffs out one of the girls from his stable for trying to leave him, a jaded vice cop is left no option other than to play rough in order to get his man.
So he forces a prostitute to go undercover(s), in the hope that she can help bring the pimp to justice.
Surprisingly, this is achieved quite quickly, but before they've even had time to finish their celebratory hotdogs (with extra cheese), the pimp breaks out, and vows to let nothing get in his way of the vengeance he feels he owes the freelance prostitute, who helped set him up for the cops....

I cannot believe I'd never seen this before, I mean seriously, how did this pass me by?!
This late night tale is a simple one. Over the course of one evening, a clean hooker ~ who's only doing it to keep her daughter in the manner of pink Duracell bunnies she has become accustomed too ~ is chased and terrorized by a crazed psychopath. Who in turn, is chased by a weary vice cop, who has all the charisma of an empty cardboard packet of Durex.

So what's all the fuss about?
Well at first, one would be forgiven for thinking that this is just another 'C' grade actors, delivering 'D' grade dialogue, to 'A' grade sleaze, kind of affair...
That is until the first 25 minutes are over, and you suddenly realise that what you're watching, is actually a really tense and well done little chase thriller, which has gripped and hoodwinked you completely, sucking you in, with it's intense violence (little bloodshed!) and supremely misogynistic overtones.

Sherman does a fine job in the directors chair, keeping everything pumped, darkly comic, and suppurating sleaze. With Alcott's cinematography allowing us a slice of neon lit streets and bar room action, that is as tangy as the butt~sweat~quaalude fruit! Reminding us all that whatever the danger, somewhere, probably because of Erin Gray, we'll always have a soft~spot for teasers in shiny spandex!!
Of course though the true gems of this thriller are the two leads in Season Hubley, offering us up a plucky, albeit non too highly believable, 'whoreoine'. And of course Wings Hauser, in certainly one of the finest roles I've ever seen him in (not hard I know!), stealing the show like a giant boob in a room full of bald men. Playing 'Ramrod' ~ one of scariest loons I've seen portrayed on film in a long time ~ the vicious, cocaine fuelled, cowboy pimposaurus of Hollywood town! Swearing and ruthlessly assaulting his way through the night~time locations and characters in order to fulfill his brutal goal...

Finally special mention should also go to the opening and closing 'Neon Slime' track of the film. Which according to IMDB (?!), was sung with absolute gusto by Hauser... And in my opinion, a track which should be played to every inner~city youth club across the country, once a month. Just so those little ingrates realise how lucky they are that I don't get to make 'character building' decisions more often!!

Sure you could argue that the B~movie brutality contained here wont be for everyone, and that it runs out of steam for 15minutes, just over an hour in, before getting it back 15minutes before the end, but overall this is a solid effort and should be seen by a wider audience. Recommended.

This is a brilliant depiction of policing Hollywood Vice. There is scarcely one minor incident in the film that does not ring true and the opening sequence, consisting of the camera simply cruising down sunset strip is one of the finest scene setters I have ever seen.

From a book by a genuine Hollywood vice officer which is long out of print.

The main story arc is a bit laboured perhaps but that is not what is important. The minor characters and incidents are what makes this one of the best films of its type and a must see for fans of gritty films. Get the uncut version though. There is a bowdlerised version doing the rounds which is worthless. I do not usually take to gratuitous swearing in films but in this the coarseness is essential to the characters and plot.
