Callas is really using the whole potential of the score:
Nobody else can produce so many vocal colours. A vocal-acting performance so to speak.
An unique and uncompromised interpretation of Puccini's geisha quite as a very private drama to be unfolded for you.
Once heard not to be forgotten!

This is one recording in which I think Callas gets it wrong. She tries to evoke the teenage Butterfly, with a cutesy voice here and there - it fails, bordering on toe-curling.

Obviously, when it comes to the big set-piece arias she is wonderful, just listen to her attack on the first note of "Un bel di". It is worth getting for the arias and the moments of theatre, like the revelation of her child. However, this is a recording of the complete opera (I say complete - there are cuts, typical of the time) and Callas is interpreting the complete persona of Cio-Cio-San, but her ill-judged "sweet voice" ruins the whole.

Gedda is miss-cast as Pinkerton and fails to deliver the steel and power you need to partner Callas, or present the insensitive Pinkerton. Karajan is on strong form, but for those seeking one recording of this wonderful Puccini opera my top suggestion would be the later Karajan recording with Freni and Pavarotti, or Barbirolli's with Scotto and Bergonzi, or Santini with De Los Angeles and Bjorling, or the best - Toti dal Monte and Gigli.

So much choice, but unless you adore Callas I'd skip this one.

Callas is completely inside her role: total identification. She sings heavenly beautiful here. Gedda is her perfect partner. A most gripping performace. Strongly recommended!

I have no issues with the quality of the performers. However the editing is atrocious with abrupt endings to passages and, in more than one instance, the passage being cut off before its ending. I would have expected better from a 'budget' recording rather than this supposed quality product. The ham-fisted way this CD has been edited spoiled what should have been a musical pleasure.

This was a gift to my neighbour who had lost her old copy. She was thrilled and touched, and I can hear it being played when I am in my garden.

The singing was superb, but the lack of a libretto spoilt the experience.
The producers can do better! A lot better

The recording is one to treasure but for one thing.
Didn't discover this until it was too late to return. CD1 has Victoria de Los Angeles in the lead role and Maria Callas on disc 2.
