Of the three albums made by the Ian Gillan Band (IGB) before the emergence of plain Gillan, Clear Air Turbulance (CAT) is the middle release and arguably the best since it makes the most of the musicianship available in the band.

The band had strong jazz rock and funk influences driven along by a superb bass player/singer John Gustafson. Gillan toured with this album and was clearly disappointed at the way the shadow of Deep Purple was hanging over him: fans went to see him, not IGB. The move back to the straight hard rock formula for the singer was inevitable from the commercial viewpoint.

However, this album is full of delights that throw more light on what makes Ian Gillan tick as a person than any other in his long career. He strikes at the folly of human society - greed, warfare, pollution with remarkable finesse. To balance the bigger themes he explores his personal past and relationships that have shaped him and which he sees as the most important thing in life.

The arrangements are full of movement and interest with all band members contributing gems of musicianship. They move between emotional moods at ease with Gillan showing that he is easily good enough to deal with any musical genre. The recording is first-class and all in all I think the album has stood the test of time very well indeed.

If you like Gillan but don't know this album, you have a treat in store for you.

Track listing above is NOT correct. This 2 CD is most probably a collection of out- takes. There is 31 tracks, only one is from the original Clear Air Turbulence.

Why the collection has that name, and front picture almost the same? And why Amazon has wrong track list?

Different product, with misleading name. Quite nice discs, anyway.

This is strange German collection. Has nothing to do with original "Clear Air Turbulence" as you know on 1CD. Not live.
