Tres Hombres is an absolute riff and rhythm classic; partly because every track is as good as the next. And that's saying something given the company they keep with the huge and enduring popularity of La Grange, the song that would be known and liked by even those who might answer "ZZ who?". It must be difficult for or band to produce an album where every song is great but they did it with this one and the album received justifiable praise upon its release.

I am not a fan of later ZZ Top music. I can't be critical of a band that achieves commercial success with a different sound but the early ZZ is where it's at for me and this is their best.

Great sound too. I was looking for a CD copy of ZZ Top's Tejas when I started reading the less than complimentary reviews of the CD transfers of the band's recordings. I've owned Tres Hombres on CD for years but didn't really pay much attention to the difference in sound between the vinyl and CD, largely because it had been a while between listenings when I bought the CD and it was the only thing available anyway. I'm not as critical as some. It's not that the earlier version sounds god awful as some have suggested, it's just that this new release sounds so, so much better.

I've not had the good fortune to see ZZ Top live so I am not driven by nostalgia to listen to the live tracks. The sound quality is not great but some may enjoy them. If you're expecting a sound like Lynyrd Skynyrd's live show at the Fox Theatre Atlanta prepare to be disappointed.

With plenty of catchy riffs, "Tres Hombres" is undeniably cool to listen to. And at its 33 minutes, the album doesn't get tiring. They fit all they need to into a short amount of time, and it definitely pays off.
"Waitin' For The Bus" and "La Grange" are the main highlights, while other tracks tend to be slightly more generic, but just as lovable.
