these are excellent pencils for drawning fine pictures, not really for children as far too good! these are for professional artists. experiment with different types of paper as they work differently on different surfaces.
the range of colours is excellent. I would not try and do a picture with any less coours or it would be frustrating getting the shade you want, you can overlay colours and blend them but they dont mix like paints or blend as easily as soft pastel, however no fixative is needed.

These are the finest colour pencils in the world because of their quality. The wood is smooth and not prone to splintering. The coating is water based so not toxic and matches the colour of the pigment. The 3.8mm thick colour core is oil pastel and it is soft, smooth and consistent yet does not need constant sharpening. It is not prone to crumbling or breaking like other brands.
There is no horrible waxiness with these pencils and no need for blending tools and fluids as the colours blend and layer perfectly without them. The finish is a soft matte throughout which is what one would hope for in a drawing so there is no need or excuse for ruining this by burnishing. As any art teacher will tell you, a sketch is not a drawing, a drawing is not a painting, and none of those is a photograph (thankfully).
The only question was which tin to buy as they range in content between 12 and 120 pencils per tin. Naturally, there is a desire for the full set of 120 but the tin of 60 contains the main and most light fast colours and averages out at less than a pound per pencil (£55). All the other sizes cost more per pencil. Initially, on reading the list of colours included, I felt there were seven others I would have chosen but if those were included, which would I have excluded? Extra colours can be bought individually and the cost would still be less than a pound per pencil overall. On opening the tin of 60, I feel I was probably incorrect in assuming other colours would be essential. I expect Faber-Castell know which colours are most used rather better than I do.
I am practising with these on some easy subjects and in colouring books as the pencils are happily very different from those I used before. I shall become more adventurous once I am accustomed to how they behave. So far, they are everything I could have wished for.
Since this review was written, a lightning deal offering the tin of 120 for £75 proved irresistible. A review of that item will be on the appropriate page but my original decison was and remains a valid one.

I purchased these crayons primarily for colouring on parchment. According to my fellow parchment crafters they were the absolute best crayons to have and I certainly have to agree. They are waterproof and non-smudge but blend together beautifully. They are a soft crayon but do not need sharpening as often as Prismacolor and seem a bit more robust but this is only my personal opinion and not in any way supported by any scientific testing carried out on my part. There is a recommended website [...] for demonstations of techniques.

I love to use coloured pencils, and had been drawing with a collection built up over a number of years, then a friend let me borrow some of hers, I was completely gobsmacked by the difference they made to my shading and layering. The fact that they are colour numbered, means I will be asking for the watercolour set for my birthday, so I can mingle the two mediums. What fun!

These coloured polychromo pencils are a complete delighht, I would highly recommend them for any budding artist to use initially, I just wish i'd been able to afford the 120 collection.

Excellent quality pencils. They are quite pricey but well worth the money as they are better quality than any other pencils on the market

These are great, i was surprised how they blend easily. Also you can erase them, usually even better than classic 4B pencil i use to sketch. In this package, there are several colors that i miss (some of skin tones...), but you have enough colors to mix majority of what you need or you can buy it individually (i hope).

truly excellent pencils, bright vibrant colours. This is the second tin I have bought, one for each of my kids who are both doing GCSE art. highly recommended.

Fantastic pencils. Beautiful colours, really sturdy and easy to sharpen. My only bugbear with them is that they don't blend well, and light colours don't show on dark. Had to change my technique a bit.
