5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and Must have, 9 Jun 2013
This review is from: Bliss: Colour Symphony, Cello Concerto, Suites/Discourse, Concerto for Two Pianos, Christopher Columbus (Audio CD)
This recording of the Bliss cello concerto is one of the greatest cello recordings of all time. It is a mystery that this concerto is not more widely known as it is a masterful work with extraordinary lyricism and panache. Surely one of the greatest English works for cello and orchestra. I have had the occasion to discuss this particular recording with a number of celebrated cellists and the unanimous verdict is that here we see a demonstration of some of the greatest cello playing of all time. Noras is a player who is all content an no spin - so rare these days and so poetic and profound. To couple his playing with the direction of Paavo Burglund who creates such an extraordinary perfume of detail and hue from these Bliss masterpieces is a rare and glorious treat. A must have disk.
